Hi GD

Just booked up a city weekend break in Derby. Gf and I will have Saturday daytime there and after doing a bit of googling with the usual results (museums, country houses etc.) I'd appreciate some suggestions on some quirky fun things to do while we're there.

Any suggestions?

It's crap (I'm from there originally). It's a rubbish industrial city with a crap road network to match. Maybe visit a park? If you're drinking go to Sandler Gate. Otherwise, head on a train to Nottingham where there is so much more to see and do.

Come on guys there must be something unique to do :)

So it has an industrial heritage. Are there any quirky places to visit, any old machinery still in operation? (gf will love that lol), any underground places? Any haunted places?

There must be some things worth visiting!

Wouldn't be my first choice for a UK city break. It's not a particularly attractive city and doesn't have any real draw. Go to Nottingham if you want somewhere local and nice.

Sadly the Industrial museum in the Silk Mill is current closed as part of a massive redevelopment project. However, there is a temporary exhibition in the Museum and Art Gallery of some of Leonardo da Vinci drawings that is supposed to be very good. Although if you want to see some industrial history travel up the Derwent valley. It's a World Heritage Site with a lot of history to see and a few nice walks along the river. Crich Tramway Museum is worth a visit, you can spend an afternoon riding on old trams if you are into that type of thing.

If you have a car and the weather is good head further north into the Peak District, There are plenty of good walks around Edale and Castleton, along with Buxton and Bakewell to visit. If you want to go underground try Speedwell cavern.

Couple of nice murals from workers' uprising type events, as I recall. Not that that would keep you busy all day, even if you stop to ask someone about the history! I've worked a few events there and it seems to have a decent arty/performing scene too. Maybe you can catch something either in town or find a venue?

Never known someone to book a city break, and then look at things to do. Think you've done it the wrong way round.

Look at things to do in cities, and then book.

anyway, too late now. Things to do in Derby for the day............a nice drive down the A5111?

If it was me, and I had a room for the night in Derby, I'd drive up to the peaks for the day and only go to Derby to sleep. Matlocks not too far away.
