I'm fed up with my Creative XFi card, its doing my nut in. Rubbish drivers and rubbish settings so I want rid.

Same with the Speedlink Medusa headset realy, its naff and keeps breaking (this is my second set thats gone wrong)

I see a lot of People are running the Asus sound cards now, please can someone provide me with info on a decent card from the asus range which will be on par or better than my current Creative card.

I'd also like to steer away from the Headset if possible and go for a 5.1 speaker setup, I had looked at the Z5500 speaker sets but they're too dear.

Thanks in advance :)

I have an xtreme-gamer & it's quite good, but if you want an ASUS card then I think the ones to go for are at least the D1 or the DX (T.W.O. For about £52).

Speaker wise if the Z5500 speakers are too dear then I have heard good things about the X-540's (around about £70 for these) I have read some users in the Home cinema part of these forums saying they are good enough for a small/mid sized room.

I would still like a pair of headphones in there somewhere (just incase) so have a look at the decent but quite lowly priced goldring range, I have the DR50's which I got for a tenner & tbh they blow the medusas away......completely.

Cheaper 5.1 speakers are good for gaming and movies, but if you intend to use for music too, they are not good in that dept. the Xonar DX/D1 comes with Dolby Headphone, so that is good for gaming when paired with some decent phones, like the Goldring's as BeeP mentioned, or some Sennheiser's.

If you are not bothered about music and would rather speaker than headphones, then some cheaper 5.1 speakers from Creative or Logitech will be a good choice.

Xtreme Music with latest 64bit Win 7 drivers is working pretty well for me - get the odd pop/crackle but its like 3 times in 40 minutes of gaming.

If you spend most of your time listening to music and watch movies - specially movies with a surround soundtrack then I highly reccomend the Xonar along with some Goldring DR150 or 50s depending on the budget.

If your gaming I'd stick with the X-Fi and try and sort the driver issues - and get a decent mid-range set of sennheisers.

I wouldn't bother with 5.1 headsets.

EDIT: Oh mis-read - you want to go for proper speakers...

I literally got the Xtreme Music working yesterday so I'll stick with it for now thanks.

Still pondering on which headset/speakers to get though!

Mix of Music and Gaming is what I use mine for mostly.

What are you looking at spending?

I have some Creative T6100 5.1 speakers, which I find are good for gaming and movies. But for music they are not good at all. It amazes me seeing the reviews for these people saying they are good for music. The biggest problem is that the bass is overbloated, I think this is the case with a lot of cheaper 5.1 speakers. I have seen people say it about Logitech and Creative sets. Rather than the bass adding weight to the music it overpowers it, and you end up with a disjointed sound. Turn the bass down, and the speakers themselves sound hollow. Can't win really.

Depending on how much you have to spend, maybe get some cheaper 5.1 speakers for gaming and some phones for music listening. It would be cheaper to do it that way round, than to look for a set of 5.1 speakers that do music well. In fact I think only the Z-5500's are pretty decent for music as far as PC 5.1 goes. Having said that it depends on ones expectations, maybe the people that think the T6100 is good for music have lower expectations of what sounds good than I do.

Of course you could just buy a pair of decent phones that will do both well.

Sounds like a I need to stop being such a tight arse and buy some Z5500's.

Thanks for that Marsman, tis appreciated :)
