Following on from a 6970 spacing issue, I am now looking to totally redo my setup.

I intend to retain/use the following components:

+ 3 x SSD (120GB)
+ 2 x 6970 GFX
+ 1KW Corsair PSU
+ Corsair Obsidian 700D Case

I therefore require:

+ RAM (the best, and what amount is best for high end gaming, compiling etc - assuming my current triple channel Dominator RAM is useless)
+ CPU (I've been told that 1155 is the best bang for the buck, and will destroy my current i7 CPU for gaming and standard processing)
+ Motherboard (1155...)
+ CPU Cooler

Everything has to be as quiet as possible, as cost-effective as possible (i.e. don't just say the 990X) last me for 2yrs whilst providing decent cooling (goes without saying, right?! :) )

Thanks in advance !

RAM - Id just get 8 gig of the Corsair Vengeance, PC 12800
CPU - 1155 i7 2600K OEM
Motherboard - Asus P8P67 Pro B3 revision (N.B. Make sure not the M one as thats mATX and will give you spacing issues, the full size one should be fine)
Cooler - Corsair H50

Not the best, but it does everything you want for a reasonable amount.

In fact you don't even need to spend this much to be honest.

For gaming, 4GB of Ram is fine, I just figured you might want 8GB, but feel free to cut it down to 4, doubt you'll notice the difference

Also the CPU cooler is quite overkill, also is absolutely massive. It is one of the best in the market right now though, although seeing as you already had an i7 setup I might as well point out that the chances are your current CPU cooler will fit SB. If you tell us what it is we can help you out. But yeah, if you want to save on the CPU cooler, an Akasa Venom will do the job just fine :)

One of my concerns is that I won't have full bandwidth on the 2 x Crossfired 6970 GFXs.

I don't mind spending A LOT, but what I meant was I didn't want an overkill build involving i7 990X, 16GB RAM etc.

I'm after the best 1155 build possible which will allow everything to run as fast as possible (x16 PCIE) with zero reliability issues :)

You realise you only lose about 2% dropping from x16/x16 to x8/x8? If you really want x16/x16 then yeah get a Gigabyte UD7 but its not worth the premium imo

If you dont have a spacing issue, then yeah theres no point spending that much money for a small upgrade, but if you have spacing issues do you have a choice?

I am just needing a CPU Cooler if I go with the list above:

Noctua NH-D14 is incompatible with the RAM;
Corsair H70 and H50 will not allow all 4 securing screws to be fixed to the motherboard;

Hmm....
