Need some advice on a low power 775 chip. Doesn't need to be anything special! Am I right in thinking one of the lower clocked 45nm Core 2s?

Either one of the Pentium Dual core E5000/6000 series or a Celeron i would say. The Pentium dual cores are 45nm and 65w but not sure about the Celeron's.

The e5200 45nm consumes 65w, its a very good overclocker got mine set to 3.2ghz with a vcore of 1.18v, very fast chip too, and at £50 a bargain!

I run an E5200 on a passive Scythe Mini Ninja, using just the 2x 120mm fans in the case blowing / sucking (can't remember which) in it's general direction and it runs really cool.

Thanks chaps, I'm thinking of trying out one of the dual core atom boards. It's for a Windows Home Server/Exchange/NAS so 24/7 running pretty undemanding jobs... I've read that their fast enough... Anyone with first hand experiance?

One more thing, 2.5" laptop drives: I guess they're not as durable as desktop counterparts? I'd set the system to power the drves off when idle

I have no experience with such systems but many people in the past have recommended the low energy AMD CPUs underclocked for a cheap server PC.

E5200 or E3200/E3300 undervolted/underclocked will use several watts max at idle and probably under 25-30w load max
