Decent CPU + more memory.

Onboard graphics which is fine for windows and there is a PCI-E slot if he finds he needs more graphics power .... or you end up with a spare card later down the line

The E2180 should'nt be considered now that the E5200 is here and only costing £7 more. Double the cache, higher speed and more efficient too.

Ok I'm going for the following:

Asus ATI Radeon EAH3450/HTP/256M Vcool Silent 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £21.99 1 £21.99

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Rev.4 Zen Black Case - No PSU £24.99 1 £24.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (ST3160815AS) £24.99 1 £24.99

MSI P31 Neo2-FR Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £39.99 1 £39.99

Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99 1 £49.99

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) £24.99 1 £24.99

Samsung TS-H653B/DEBH 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £12.99 1 £12.99

Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate the help! I had to get the Zen case as its the only one wide enough for a large CPU cooler. Decided to go for the E5200 as the above comment about cache and stock speed. Seagate as it has the extra warranty etc.

It's all setup. Built it last night and he's loving it. Must say though, the DVD-RW was an absolute pain. It wouldn't install XP I had to swap it out for a spare to install.
