So the IM we use at work atm has developed a memory leak and it's server needs to be rebooted regularly now to temporarily resolve the issue.

It has been put to us if we know of any other free IM server/client solution we can recommend, hence I immediately thought of the knowledgable folk on OCuK :)

We currently use 'Spark/Pidgin' as the client and 'Openfire' as the backend, which is very good for our needs, the new IM needs to:

1: Not be resource hungry, especially the client
2: Free
3: Able to add contacts from different departments at work and arrange them by department
4: Be able to send a bulk broadcast message to each of these departments (very important) for example if I need to send a message to all the guys in the technical team then I currently right click the tech team and choose send broadcast message.
5: Simple file sharing (ie sending of screenshots to colleagues, or any other small work related files)
6: Ability to tell if people are online or idle
7: edit: Notify of new message (by flashing in the taskbar for example)

As I say it doesn't have to be fancy but at least fit the above criteria. It will only be used in house for people in the office.

Thanks for any recommendations, much appreciative :)

edit: this will only be used between 20 or so people

MSN Messenger + E-mail?

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we ruled out msn messenger as it has ads and is total bloatware however it does fit the criteria.

Also we tested email to not be as effective as some people don't regularly check their email and our current IM flashes in the taskbar if someone has sent you a message (actually this should be in the criteria too - notification of new messages)

Thanks for the suggestions guys but I think the powers that be have decided on 'ejabberd' backend with either 'Pidgin' or 'Gajim' as the client.

Unless anyone knows of any other good jabber/xmpp client?

You can use Pidgin? :)
