ok looking to build a new rig, will be used for the usual, internet, office, and gaming (supcom, pro evo) but dont really know where to start. can you guys help me out please!

budget is around £650 and here is what i need.

motherboard
processor
monitor
gfx
ram
psu
case

i have hd's, keyboard, mouse, winxp. monitor wise id like a new widescreen but if its going to send the bidget over the top then ill make do with my 17"crt for now.
wont really be overclocking either.

cheers guys

edit: -

just to let you know at the mo in running a64 3000, 6800gt, 1gb of crap ram. in turns of increase in power im just looking for something that will give supcom a nice boost and make the pc a bit more freindly to use day to day, so i was thinking maybe x1950? also maybe this would leave a little extra to fit a nice 19" widescree monitor too. cheers

what bus do your HDDs use IDE or SATA?

Anywhere here is a rough spec, couldn't fit a 19" monitor in as it would be over budget.

hds are on ide but i think they have sata connector too. not 100% on this though. rekon the 8800 is overkill? would i be able to get away with a x1950? thanks for the help btw

would this be adequet for my needs? would i see much of a speed improvement with the intel chip?

also what is the diff between conroe and allendale?

Both Dual Core, conroe has 4mb L2 Cache, Allendale has 2mb L2 Cache

-amd spec-

If you have two HHDs on IDE that should be fine as this board has one IDE connection.

The 8800 is great, the 1950 beats it on some things but rarely.

Let's just say the Intel spec will bury that AMD spec under a very large pile of bricks.

It really is mad to build AM2 system when C2D outperforms it so much when overclocked.

ok now we're getting there. would i see a massive performance diff between conroe and allendale?

say

Intel Core 2 DUO E4400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail

and

Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Thing is that when overclocking, most of the c2d chips quite easily hit clocks of 3ghz and above. However when clocking you'll not be able to increase the L2 cache. So yes, it probably is worth it, but that also depends on how much you're willing to pay.

There is a good link on wikipedia if you wish to understand more about it:
