Hi All,

Pondering over the various options for a new build for my bro, primarily for gaming. Always appreciate the great advice that is available here on the forum so here I am.

The budget would be around 400-550 tops and he already has a 5850, so its possibly just the Mobo, Processor and Ram that im after.

Have been looking at some of the pre OC'd bundles such as new i7/i5 etc but am also happy to OC myself. Would it be a good idea to get something a bit cheaper and add in an SSD or another 5850 possibly?

Any advice that can be offered is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

So you don't need a case/PSU/HDD/optical drive?

If not what PSU will you be using?

I'd look at something like this (depending on your PSU):

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor with FREE Operation Flashpoint Red River Game £169.99

MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £139.98

OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-60G) £99.98

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £39.98

Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £24.98

Total : £486.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

But be quick, they only got 500 units of that SSD at that price :p lol

You could always drop the SSD and add in another 5850 if you'd prefer and you'd still be under budget.

Hey thanks sk82 really appreciate that.

Sorry forgot to add that were all ok for the other components. He also has a 750W Corsair PSU

What you have here looks really good and will show discuss it with my bro a bit later.

In terms of i5 verus i7, the only obvious difference I saw from a quick look is that the i7 has HT and 2MB more cache memory? Do you think it would be better to go for the i5 then over i7 and include an SSD as suggested? For gaming would the i5 be more than enough with a decent OC?

Thanks again.

Yeah if it's mainly a gaming pc then i5 is more than enough, you only need an i7 for like video editing, etc where HT will come in use. Heres a gaming comparison if your interested.

You can get a good overclock with the Corsair A50 but if your looking to extreme have a look at the Noctua D-14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow (quite a bit more expensive though, probably not worth it imo, could spend money on better things)

Ok cool, thanks.

So we think that 5850 specced above will be ok with his existing one on a TX750 Corsair PSU.

Did have a quick poke around and seems it should be more than capable?
