Howdy,

I'm bored and need something to drive for a couple of months that will interest me. Up to £4k won't upset the house savings or the interest made either. But I guess the cheaper the better as the less lost the better should I end up with a turd.

I want something that won't lose much (if any) money over a short term ownership, something which is a bit of fun - other than that don't care if it's FWD, RWD, AWD, 2 seater, coupe, estate, whatever. So long as it's a bit of fun and doesn't lose much money.

List of potentials I have so far:

Subaru of various forms (maybe not as I may want to keep it)
Nissan 200SX
Mitsubishi Galant/Evo
MX-5
306 GTi-6
BMW 3 series coupe with 6 cylinders (E36?)

Basically - I'm open to anything. Preferably no more than 60 miles from Birmingham too.

Suggestions? :D

Civic Type R? Should get a tidy EP3 for that budget..cosmic grey facelift premier edition. Not likely to ruin you through running costs. Not sure I'd go shopping for one in Birmingham mind!

£4k is awkward money for an MX5, won't get you a nice Mk3 yet and the Mk2/2.5s are a real risk with chassis leg corrosion sadly.

You can just about sneak a honda integra for £4k, not sure if they're terrible at that end of the market though. Always fancied one :)

£3-4k fwd, I would look at an ep3. An integra would run more potential of throwing a big bill. An ep3 will have good resale value year round.

That much on an mx5 sadly puts you in mk2 range and finding one that isn't a rusty pos is a nightmare.

If you want to risk it and want a Subaru alternative, why not a gt4 celica?

A slightly shoddy e36 m3 could be an option. Find a cheap but relatively mechanically sound one and you'll be able to move it back on again easily. You'll just have to be really careful when picking.

Spend say £2.5-3k on an mr2 turbo, watch for rust and have fun, of a gt4 as suggested but they're not quite as dramatic.

How much are the soarers with the good engine? Gto another slightly mad jap option to own for a short time.

At that budget you'll only get a shed in Golf R32 land, even the one linked is £750 over budget. I really struggle to recommend these at the moment; unless you're looking for something with '4wd' they rarely make financial sense.
If you're saving for a house a better alternative to the R32 in the same vein would be the 2.8L 4motion of which you can get a decent one for <£3k, but unless you need practicality my money here would be on a 2-seater where the roof comes off. Or maybe even something like a Saab 9-3?

Honestly I think an R32 would have a good chance of being serviced and looked after more thoroughly than a 2.8 4motion in the same car; it is an enthusiasts car vs just a high end car (in its day) so IMO more likely to have had the oil changed at the right time etc.
