I have between 400 and 500 pounds to spend on:
CPU
Motherboard
RAM
GFX card

I havnt been keeping up with the latest hardware for a few months now and im not sure whats what anymore.
Reading through the forums, i'v got the impression that i should be looking at an e6600 with a minimum of 2GB ram and most likely an 8800gts.
Am i right?
Is there anything better?
What motherboard is best?

Depends of course what you are using it for and if its going to be oc'ed?

I would look at one of the new 1333MHZ FSB Conroes such as the 6750 which are out soon.

GFX would say 8800GTS 320mb (640mb depending resolution you will be using??)

Motherboard - one of the P35 Gbytes would be fine as they are typically very good boards now.

Ram you would be fine with the Giel PC6400 if its not going to be oc'd, the Giel doesn't OC as high as the Ballistix PC5300 or some G. Skill. Depends on usage and ocability.

With the things Jaffa Cake said in mind this might be a start:
