Blueyonder 20MB.
2 PCs.

Currently one PC (the main one) connects to the cable modem by ethernet, and the other PC connects to this PC.

I'd prefer if both PCs connected directly to the cable modem (through a router) so that one didn't need to be on for the other to connect.

Wireless would be nice if there was absolutely no drop in bandwidth (a bit of latency isn't a big deal).

I have no clue about routers!

The reason for the thread is that I can't.

I can't tell the routers apart, I don't know what I need. Nor do I know what kind of cables I need. From memory I had to get different cables to go from the pc to the pc than I would to go from the pc to a router when I first networked these.

Never say you can't. Give it ago and someone will comment on what you have said. It's not that I don't want to help it's the fact that you won't learn if you don't try.

With all due respect folks. I'm really quite annoyed at how much I'm being patronised with the sarcastic little remarks.

I spend a great deal of time helping people in other sections of the forums where I -DO- know what I'm doing.

I haven't the faintest idea about routers. Not A Clue. So rather than spend weeks learning all there is to know about them I thought I'd just ask someone to pick the stuff for me and trust that they'll make a decent choice.

Is that too much to ask?

Welcome to Networks & Internet Connectivity, too much time spent in here and we all end up sounding like Tolien :-)

Excellent! That was just what I was after. Thanks!

What cable do I need - crossover or not?
Not, crossovers are usually for directly connecting two devices, e.g. not through a switch. You want straight patch cables.

Roger. I want a straight patch from cable modem to router - smallest length.

Straight patch from cable modem to my main rig - smallest length.

Straight patch from cable modem to the downstairs rig - 10m.

Sorted! :)

Edit : Hang on a minute. That's a wireless router.. and I'm buying cables for it.

I think I'm approaching epic fail...

Lol :p

The WRT54GL + Tomato route is the best one indeed.

I'd avoid wireless personally, unless you *really* want it. 20mbit will be pushing the boundaries of Wireless G and even though N could do it, wireless sucks :)

I AM ON THE INTARNETS!!!!

My God, it's full of ads!

Got the router through today. Sadly setup wasn't easy - but that was my fault.

My CD drive doesn't like being on the nVidia controller, so I'd to go and copy the CD onto a flash stick. Then the setup doesn't work and asks for weird information. I finally figure out it shouldn't be.. and I probably need to turn off the modem. So I download the latest setup from Linksys... and they've changed the steps to indicate that.

In any case, I'm now up and connected. Haven't got the cable through the floor yet, it's a 2 person job. But I'm sure it'll work ok.

Now to look up Tomato and see if there's much point in it.

Thanks again folks!

Tomato was an anticlimax. It's on now. And wireless access is disabled - on the default firmware it's difficult to tell if wireless access is disabled, or security for wireless access :P

Wow... that was unnecessary.

There are many many options available with tomato but for what you need I probably would have stuck with the default firmware, props for getting it on there though.

I had lots of fun with ddwrt (similar software) the first time around.

You didn't need the CD at all - it doesn't do anything useful that you can't do yourself with a web browser (and if you're not doing anything too fancy, the defaults should work).

:-/

optitech-uk had a point though, stick "cable router" into the search box and you'll get a gajillion results, mostly pointing at the WRT54GL.
Same applies to whether you should use crossover or straight-though cables (it doesn't matter: any router, modem, or network card that wasn't being used to post pictures of baby Jebus will autoswitch)...

Well, I figured since I've answered a gazillion spec me up threads I could have one for myself :P I really just wanted a product name and the cable type.

And yeah, wish they'd just put the IP of the router on the box, I wouldn't have needed the CD.

I've always had trouble with networks though. I've no issues with BIOS, I've built a few PCs, watercooled my own, overclocked etc etc etc. But ask me to fix a network and I'll run :P
