Hi Guys,
I need to extend a wireless network from one house to another.

The 2 houses are not far apart, about 20-30 metres.

1 house already has a BT homehub supplying the internet connection, what i was thinking of was buying another router and a directional outdoor aerial.

I would then run a network cable from the home hub into the new router that i would put into the attic. Then obviously put the aerial outside facing the other house.

Can you guys maybe recommend a good router and aerial or if you have any ideas on the whole thing i would really appreciate it.

regards

An N router + N card setup would be easily powerful enough, with enough gain to be connected 2/3 houses away. You wouldn't have to move it.

Router: Belkin N1 router
Card: Belkin N1 PCI card.

The 2 go hand-in-hand.

And this would give me enough signal for this kind of distance?

What if there wasnt direct line of sight between the router in house one and the laptop in house 2?

If you want a permanent connection between the houses, a pair of WRT54G's will do the job. Set one up as an access point and one as a bridge or extender. Will give you 4 ethernet ports and wireless in house 2.

I would definately say that it will be enough distance, I am currently connected to my neighbours router about 50 metres away with good distance, and this is not even an N1 router.
