dad wants to upgrade the pc i gave him for free
hes scottish has short arms and deep pockets and given me a budget of

£300

current specs are

i7 950 @3.06ghz
gigabyte x58 usb3 mobo
6gb ddr 667mhz
nvidia 9800gt
256gb hdd
1tb hdd
dvd drive

he's whinging its slow he just photoshops bit of video editing no gaming (but think he mite wanna try american truck sim after seeing me play it, but i doubt it)

web surfing youtube etc etc

now i know first would be a 256gb SSD
but he could do with a new case, the smaller the better and a new cooler coz the one i put in is huge and it pushes on the side panel

dunno which way to go the 9800gt is crap it dont do audio over hdmi so if poss a new gpu... mite be able to twist his arm for a little more cash

spec away,, and thanks in advanced

Take a look at the mobo bundles maybe? Infact even buying things separately you should be able to get a cpu (i5 6400/6500), a non z170 mobo and at least 8gb of ddr4 ram for 300 or under.

After the SSD
Xeon X5650 + Cheap all in one water cooler.
3X8gb or 3x4gb of fast 1.5volt DDR3 memory.

Should be a big jump in performance for not much money.

Graphics card upgrade would depend if you overclock and what resolution monitor he uses.

A decent cooler for the CPU and clock it to 4.0

A SSD 240gig

New case

A new graphics card of some sort, nothing too fancy - perhaps a 460?

Everything needs replacing really. Any cpu/motherboard/ram upgrade now is going to be severely held back by the gpu (the 9800gt is ancient). About the best he's going to get for £300 is a new gpu, a SSD and a cooler so that he can overclock to get the most out of the cpu. After that save some more and replace the rest.

Another option would be to pick up a bundle in the MM for him if you have access under the old legacy rules.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £307.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

A very capable cpu, a motherboard with the latest intel socket, and 16gb ddr4 ram. You'll see the biggest upgrade with this I imagine.

I think this is your best bet, or something similar. maybe knock it down to 8gb to see if you can squeeze an ssd in?

The onboard graphics will do audio over hdmi and could game at 720p if ever needed. No point in speding cash on gpu he isn't going to use really.

well in typical tight arse dad fashion...he moaned when i suggested the upgrade..with "im not paying that" line...even after he said he would

so the old fart is just gonna get a ssd and if thats no good then tuff titty

wouldnt be so bad but hes only had to buy a monitor, i gave hime the rest for free

family eh

Put a 250 GB SSD in as the main drive for Windows and apps and he'll think you've turbo boosted the whole PC :)

A new GPU wouldn't hurt either, but don't go overboard. A 4GB RX 460 / RX 470 or a 3GB GTX 1060 would be the upper end, assuming 1080p. Watch out for the DVI connector though if this is needed for the monitor, not all of the latest gen of GPUs have this as standard (particularly the reference boards).
