So, currently in the E46 330Ci, loved every minute of it.

However! Next month I am moving to Florida and will need a car out there.

I don't really have any requirements as it'll be a first car there and would quite like to cruise around in comfort. No V8 'stangs as insurance would tear me a new one, but open to pretty much anything else.

Budget going to sit at <$5000.

Do your worst! with links is even better

or something to that extent, yeeehawww 'MURICA n such ;)

You will get no real help at all on this thread as few of us know the local market or what you get for your money. So expect loads of 'GET A V8 LOL' posts.

So instead I'll just congratulate on your fantastic move, which will be awesome. How did you manage it?!

Glad to see another OcUK member moving over here! Where are you moving to?

The used car market in the US is not like in the UK, we do not get massively cheap cars after only a couple of years. $5000 is going to be a *very* restrictive budget over here, in order to get anything even remotely decent you're going to want to come up to $8-10k. Once you've established yourself, you may want to look into leasing a vehicle as that will be your best way of getting into something nice for a very small amount of money. Currently you can lease a lot of lovely new cars for ~$250 p/m. Remember of course that you will be earning $ from now on so stop thinking about everything being super cheap, the cost of living out here will surprise you once you've settled in.

If there's anything I can do to help with the move/finding things, let me know, I've done it myself and I moved my parents over here too last year.

If it were me i'd be going for something that you just don't see in the UK, so either a massive pickup or something with a V8 as helpful as that is...

I've got a mate who now lives in New Orleans and drives a Rav4... i mean come on...

Ever driven in New Orleans? A Rav4 is ideal. Something with a high ride height, fairly long suspension travel, big tires and reliable. We had a Ford Escape, which in any other city would have been dull but in New Orleans it was perfect.

OP, as iceman says, your budget has you right at the bottom end of the market. Buy something domestic and buy on condition.

I'll answer both yourself and Iceman in this one

My father lives out there (Tampa) and my visa was approved yesterday. I know it isn't a great deal of money to get me started on the car route, but having no job lined up yet means I have to be wary of leasing until then, but it is my goal.

As for pickup/something not in the UK, you've nailed it, I really want a pickup, simply because of the 'American dream' etc etc, plus I've always found them comfortable to ride in.

Happy to take you out some time but I can't give it to you :p

Though with current McLaren depreciation, $5k will probably buy you one in a few months...
