Spec me!

Hi,

Im thinking of getting a new rig via my student loan, if it allows. If not I'll have to buy one with my own money anyway as my computer is as vital to my continued existance in this unrelenting world.

I've not really looked into the best price/performance components as such in recent months, so I'd really appreciate someone doing a spec for me within a £1000 budget.

Im going to be using it for gaming and work of course, so it's going to definetly need Microsoft Office Student 2007. Another must would be a 19" widescreen monitor. It must have decent overclocking ability also. The rest I put up to you. Oh and please include a mouse, keyboard, mousemat and a nice big leather chair.

Cheers!.

I'd probably go for either melbourne720's specification or the one done by hp7909 as both fit the original specifications most closely.

Have you considered doing without Office though? Open Office is entirely free and has most of the functionality of MS Office, unless you have very specific requirements for MS Office it is certainly worth a look. :)

Alright thanks for your suggestions guys.

After a little bit of reading I decided to upgrade the CPU to save money on the cooling stuff etc. I changed the memory after reading around on the reviews for the Geil stuff which is cheaper and faster. I upgraded the monitor and I also dropped the Office Home and Student after checking the OpenOffice suite (which looks very sufficient). I thought I would pick up Vista as It would seem somewhat future proof at this moment in time. Plus I fancy playing games like Crysis etc.

So overall I've got this:

EDIT: That's £904 inc VAT and Shipping.

Please let me know if I should change anything.

Cheers

Can you ring them up and change that mobo to the P35 version (either DS3P or DS3R) as there is little price difference but those boards support Penryn (new Intel processors round the corner)?

Oh I haven't ordered yet mate!.

I've switched to the motherboard you've stated, the Gigabyte board if you meant that one.

I've also decided to throw in a Medusa 5.1 headset and XFI Gamer 7.1 sound card for some serious CSS ownage biscuits.

I would go with the Corsair 520w PSU, you could get a cheaper case such as the Akasa Zen if you want to save a few £.

Lesson Learned!.

Though I must point out it's from OCuk, they wouldn't sell me a piece of crap now would they?.

Plus they state it's made from high quality stuff.

Well i'll let you comtemplate on that if you wish, but could you please reccomend a power supply?. The 500w+ one's seem to range massively in price, so I suppose there's going to be a real winner amongst them.

This one: Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

I don't think Huntkey are all that bad but they are definitely at the cheaper end of the range so I wouldn't choose them if I had the money to get something else. OcUK did previously sell Q-Tek PSUs also so you can argue they would sell pretty poor PSUs, that said even a Q-Tek is fine for a low powered system provided you accept the 500w model probably is only capable of 300w continuous. :)

Ok thankyou for filling me in on that info.

I've gone with the PSU you've all appeared to reccomend.

That brings my total to £1036 inc VAT and Shipping.

Bring on the student loan!.

Phew, yes I did mean the gigabyte one.

Also hp7909 is right about the PSU. Corsair for the win.
