Spec me :)

Need a spec for a friend. Having been out of the loop for about 2 years as I haven't been building much I'm a little stuck with all the choices available.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Budget of £500, just the PC. Already have the monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

Ah, knew I had forgotten something! Gaming.

Operating system will be needed, however he's a student so any relevant student deals will probably be used.

Can he reuse his disc drive?
You could always pick a cheaper hard drive if you had to get exactly on budget.
For not much more money it could be changed to a quad core cpu.

What resolution will you be gaming at?

I think we will probably need another disc drive. I'm not sure what size the screen is, but at a guess the resolution is probably 1280x1024.

Are the newer AMD chips a good choice now then? When I built my PC a few years ago (E6300), there wasn't anything offering the same performance or better in the same price bracket from AMD.

Could you explain the reasons/benefits of those choices please? I'm not likely to just jump straight in and buy something without a little bit of background knowledge.
