So after my last spec me a car for 8k a few months back the missus has a new job which lands us a company car so nerfs the new car... However...

I want to get shot of our jointly owned golf, give her half and get something different. Don't fancy buying her half and keeping the golf tbh.

So wise forum answer me this...

Do I:
Blow 2 grand max on something interesting(ish)
Or:
Spend £500 on an old Focus or Ka and stop being silly.
Door to door commute is 5 miles in a 40 A road, and the company car will be used for all proper journeys and joint stuff etc.

I'm thinking Clio 172, Corolla tsport, yaris tsport, or even citreon c2 gt etc.

Not worried about insurance as Im old, nor particularly petrol as the mileage is so low, but equally I dont want something to break within 5 minutes and be faced with a £1000 bill. Also it would need to be capable of a ~50mile journey once in a blue moon.

Thoughts??

£2k would just about get you in a Clio 182, possibly a EP3 Type R.

Do you just want something to hoon in now and again?

Would rather keep it below £2k if anything.
Yep, the commute is so small I thought it would be fun to have something well, fun.. But equally the frequency of me having said fun will be pretty low so that's why the sensible option is still on the table!

Are old renault sport clios a big bill waiting to happen? Hows about the toyota tsports? Any less likely to break??

I'm not fully clued up on the Clio's but I know its best to try and find one that's had the belts done reasonably recently.

I have 2 friends with them. One has a 2003 172 that cost him £1200. The other has a 2005 182 that cost him £2400.
