Hey all,

I'm looking for a new router for my home. A few people will be accessing it. Range is the most important thing to me (esp 2.4Ghz). It would be nice to have support for openwrt or maybe ddwrt.

I want to spend around the £100 mark.

I was looking at the archer c7-c9 range?

What do you guys think?

Andy

Edit: with virgin media and using superhub 2 ac (dont like it)

HI Drogon, I have the Archer C7 and I have to say I am not disappointed. It is a nice piece of kit, highly recommended. It has been going stron for nearly 2 years now.

I did have a D-Link DIR 655 (which was a good little router) for a few years prior to getting the TP-LINK Archer C7 AC1750.

I have had no problems with it at all. I did find the web interface a bit confusing after using the D-Link for a few years but it did not take long to find my way around it.

I would say if you can stretch to £110(some well known sites have it right now at this great price) go for the TP Link VR900(AC1900 specs), has everything you need and more future proof etc..

I'm using one now and think it's great..
Wifi range is excellent, I'm two floors up and have no issues.

The VR900 includes a VDSL2 modem, not sure drogon needs that with Virgin Media. If you can get it for a similar price though, you might as well.

AC56U is £80 and AC1200 and shares the same CPU/RAM as the AC68U is £100ish depending on the offer, TPLink isn't as cheap as it used to be relative to the rest of the market. If you want the best possible 2.4Ghz coverage then a Unifi AP or AP-LR will make a massive difference.

Thanks for getting back to me guys. I ended up going for an older n66u. I picked one up for £45 on eBay. I stuck the merlin firmware on for now. It's going really well. I'm using a couple of old tplink 841n's I had laying around as access points. To extend the 2.4ghz coverage.
