hey guys/gals my dad is finally ready to bite the bullet on a new system, he currently has my old i5 6600k which is very long in the tooth now and he has a awesome psu that he got about 2 year ago (think it cost about 180 quid) at most so no psu needed and he is gonna be using my old radeon 5700 pulse gpu so thankfully wont need to buy a new gpu either :)

the budget is a bit rough but basically 500-600 quid but can be adjusted.

he is gonna need a case but he hasnt decided on one yet and he deffo wants at least one nvme drive or 2.

im unclear if he is bothered with rgb he says mine looks good but hes not fussy i think he would prefer a solid system that performs well :)

he wants a decent upgrading motherboard as well so he can whack in any future am5 cpus in the future.

its going to be used for gaming mainly and he loves dcs flight sim and his current monitor which is still fairly newish is only 1080p but he will probably go 2k at some point and i know he is eagerly awaiting homeworld 3 :)

Tbh judging and guessing as to his needs, you might be best off looking at a 7500F bundle.

he has my old

gigabyte z170 board with a i5 6600k @ stock
think he has 32 gig ram ddr4
rx 480 radeon 8 gig reference one
various harddrives that will get swapped over some ssd's some mechanical
a 30 quid ancient case thats about 15 year old

he has a really good psu and is getting my old radeon 5700 pulse card so gpu and psu dont factor into budget and peripherals dont either.

edit: after getting a steam deck a while back he is slowly getting back into pc gaming but his current rig is a bit of a hinderance, his monitor is 1080 p for the moment but that will quickly change knowing him and i used to game at 2k on the gpu im giving him :)

Have a look for 7500f bundles, some are pretty good but obviously match them price wise against separate parts. The 7500f is basically a 7600 without the igpu, it just can't be purchased outside of bundles unfortunately.

You can save a fair chunk last that I checked, but it is dependent on the budget and I haven't checked or compared to buying separate parts for a little. I would say that you can potentially get an excellent 7500f + motherboard with 32gb of 5600-6000 RAM for around the £350-400 range.

It might be different now, I'll spec up a minimum via ocuk for you in a little to compare once I'm at my PC.

edit : dont wanna gimp him on memory speed but dont want to pay a lot for faster stuff thats unneeded, is there a sweet spot? :)

Not quite, you still want 5600 to 6000 with decent timings, partially because they don't cost much more if anything than slower ram. But the 7000 series outside of the x3d chips does benefit from memory speed to a degree.

I love a good MATX build, I've only included the cpu/mobo/ram as a reference to make it easier to compare. You could shave off £30 and still get a comparable motherboard on OCUK, but it'd be an ATX.

A good NVME drive is in the region of £60-70 for a 1tb.

There are a few comparable for around £150, Asus have a couple on ocuk. So more of a saving, basically compare the above at £450 Vs what you might be able to get with a 7500f bundle. There used to be solid savings to be had, fingers crossed that's no different now.

FYI: 7600X doesn't come with a cooler. 7600 non-X has wraith stealth, 7700 non-X has wraith prism. The stealth isn't great, the prism is decently usable.

Below would be my recommendations with atx rather than mATX...I added a fast nvme as don't know if you have one and you'll want something for your OS drive. It has 2 more nvme slots for expansion.

I'm not sold on the a620 boards for future expansion. I'll link HU vid below...the chipset is too cutback in my view and not worth the £20 price saving. But, they are budget boards and as long as you don't put anything powerful in them they'll be ok. . to be fair the tuf a620 has a 12+2 50A vrm setup so should be good, but if you look at the cpu compatibility part, it directs you to the asus website, and the board isn't listed. all the other asus a620 boards listed have cpu's with a max power rating of 65W, and if any are like the Asrock board, putting in a more powerful cpu down the line will just cause it to throttle...even the asrock below, when the new bios was put in the raised the power use to 90w, caused the vrm temps to go way up to compare to the worst of the b650 boards(asus b650 prime boards so don't recomment them). It's just really frustration not to see a review of this board..most reviews just go through the features and looks, but not actually the physical performance...or none that I've seen, hense why suggest upping to the b650 board below as that can run a 7950X fine, so you'll have no problem with futurte upgrades.
Ram just chose 6000C30 ram, as this is AMD top recommendation, and only £9 moreh mst boards than the C36 above( though doesn't say expo, but most ram timings programmed in should work...just making you aware though)...wont make a massive noticelbe difference with the gpu you're using, but the tighter timing will do make a difference, and with a more powerful gpu in there, you will get a few extra fps...the corsair you chose is good also, they generally are compatible with most boards, or the g skill trident neo stuff, but they are bit more expensive again.

so again depends on how much upgrading you Dad will actually do

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong though, as it does look a good board, but then so does the B650 offering on offer for £20 more, and that I know works fine​

im against him getting a am4 platform as many years down the line he will want to upgrade it and for the same money might as well jump to am5 and have a upgrade path, im running a am4 system but its end of life and will probably change to am5 as well in a few years, that does look a solid enough system though bud.

his ddr4 mem is also mixed and matched from a few of my leftovers over the years.

for that money deffo am5 :)

still waiting on him to decide on a case lol

edit: he wants something at the moment similar or better performance to mine which your build would do but he also wants a good upgrade path and that is very important to him as we hate changing motherboards :)
