Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to spec my friend an AMD X2 system for less then £400, can it be done?

he really needs dual core for video editing and stuff that's very processor hungry but he's also very short on cash, if you cant build a resonable X2 system for £400 what would be the next best way to go?

First of all I'll be more than impressed if you can get a decend X2 rig for that money.

Also, AMD dont do video editing well, for video editing you need lots of RAM and a fast processer like an Intel. Go for a min of 1Gb of memory

If it's for video editing and other CPU-intensive tasks, without much emphasis on gaming, then definitely go for one of those Pentium D 805's, they're a diamond in the rough due to their insane overclockability on air.

ok, well i wasnt really expecting that, i thought the intel dual cores were a bit pants really.

but thanks and what mamory manufacturer would you recomend and any perticular mobo? this system's not going to be OCed.

If it's not going to be OC'ed then I wouldn't suggest a Pentium D 805 as it'll be dog slow at stock, the only reason to buy one of those is because they can overclock to ~4GHz on stock air cooling.

If your friend can wait a few weeks, though, AMD are planning extremely aggressive price cuts when Intel launch their new processors. Rumour is that the Athlon X2 3800+ could drop to as low as £99.

As for memory, any RAM will do since you're not overclocking, so just get something cheap. I use Corsair Value PC3200 in my machine, and even though it's supposed to be sub-par for overclocking and gaming, it's performing incredibly for me and was cheap as chips.

how hard would it be for him to OC on say a DFI board, i know those things tend to be designed for OCing but he's a very basic user and i dont think he has the technicak knowhow or the confidence to OC an AMD, but i have no ideas about intel OCing

When are these price cuts going to happen? Any links to news\press releases\more info?
