Hi Guys,
My friend has asked me to build him a pc with a budget of £650 but can stretch to £800 if he really has to. The budget will be for a base pc only so no monitor required although im not soo sure of the usual mouse/keyboard.

Anyway, im not looking to overclock this computer but i think he might have a another friend that could sort him out in that direction. Oh he uses the computer for general surfing and also to run flight simulator!

Hi there,

I know that you said without monitor but it is a 20".

What is his current setup?

The chip would deffinatly require some sort of OC. If it's not going to be OC'd then a higher spec CPU would be good. Also not sure on CPU cooler....

Someone needs to check out the PSU and the GFX card as I don't really know what would be good for him... I don't think Flight Sim is going to require the lastest and greatest card and I would have thought no more than £100 would prob do.

Speced 4GB RAM but you will need a x64 OS to pick it all up.

Speakers aren't anything to shout about but thought i'd whack them on.

Without speakers and monitor it's only £495 so you could easily add Vista64 onto that.

I really wouldn't see the point in him going quad which is why I suggest that he get's the low end dual core and OC it around 3ghz.

The new penryn cores will fit straight onto this anyway if he does need the quad for some reason.

Cheers, Doug.

Might aswell loose the monitor and speakers and buy a E2180 + 8800 GT/ATI 1950 or something? :)

That's what I was thinking...

Will he need the GT tho? I did look at the 1950 but I thought the 2600XT would have been quicker? It has 'stream processors' (better than 1950?) faster GPU and a lot faster RAM due to the GDDR4

I would deffinatly think that a faster CPU would be very benifical if he isn't OC and even if he is would the 2180 get a lot further than the 2140?

Could put more HDD's in and a better case etc but in my experince I would prefer a nice new monitor etc. All depends on how new his current rig is.

What has he currently got?

Im not sure whether he will overclock it so i think a standard beter CPU might be better.........?

Add another £80 and get the E6750 which is at 2.66ghz stock.

Still under £600 for a dual core with 4GB RAM. Could even stretch to a quad core but if he only surfs the net he won't need it.... He won;t even need the E6750 I wouldn't think if all he does is surf and play the odd game of Flight Sim.

I would prob get the E2180 and a 8800GT but again I don't think he'll need that for surfing and the odd game of Flight Sim....

Get a bigger HDD, better case, keyboard & mouse and maybe a new monitor (if his old one is old old) as I really feel that would benifit him more if that's all he does.

Does anyone know how tasking Flight Sim is?
