Hi my gf just passed her test, around 1 month ago and wants a first time car, her budget is <1k She has seen some 1.6 golfs for just shy of £1k that she likes, doesnt want a mondeo as its too big for her she says!

Any links to auto trader or piston heads for posibilities will be apreciated!

You dont want a Golf as a first car tbh. Insurence will cost a bomb.

Get a small Hatchback. Like a Yaris, Fiesta, Micra's etc....

You have a low budget, so write off anything with a VW badge. My GF has a similar budget, and currently we are eyeing up MK1 Seat Leons and Toledos.

Nothing like a bit of random sweeping statements. You'll probably find the quotes for the "small hatchbacks" are artificially higher due to them being the type of car most commonly crashed/damaged/written off by first time drivers.

Shes actualy done a quote on the 1.6 golf and it came out on a very good side of £900 for a 10month bonus policy with admiral, and her grandad added as a named driver! Its just if it breaks and the running costs of a golf!

Good shout on the seat leon though will take a look at some of them in her price range!

Probably a 1.3 ford Ka

My daughter bought one just after passing her test and her insurance was just under £800 fully comp from Direct Line. But I'm with them too so she got a discount because of same address multi policy.

am i right in thinking that milage for these sort of aged cars isnt much of a problem, for instance one at 80k, and another at 110k, as long as its been serviced and had the usual belts and pumps changed?

Should be absolutely fine, obviously all cars can fail, and some are more prone than others, but so long as you have a comprehensive (and reliably sourced) history and proof of maintenance, you should be fine, especially with 80,000 miles.
