My parents have finally made the decision to step into the big new world of the "internet thing".

They don't need anything fancy, nothing "unlimited" - although I do know the BBC Radio website will take a considerable hit.
Digital Radio, and 'Listen Again' could well be on all day everyday for the month. So I am not sure if these 2GB packages will be enough.

It's not going to be for gaming, and I cannot see 8Mbit being needed, unless it just happens to come with the package.

They are looking to spend around £10-£20 a month.

Any suggestions.

No - it's a good idea, but they don't have Sky.
They did however move into the big wide world of Freeview not long ago :D

Is everyone happy with AOL these days ?

I thought people always had something against them. I am going back to the days when Compuserve and AOL were competitors. When they used to charge you per minute on top of the BT phone bill, and charge you monthly and charge a lot too.

The problem is every isp you go with is good until the day you have a problem then unfortunatly customer service is always there last priority, i also never had any problems with UKonline but again never had to ring CS lol

Just my 2 pence worth

I'm with IDnet. Their customer support is excellent, they aim to answer the phone by the third ring.

£17.99 for upto 8mb, with 2gb included, if they go over that, its £1/gb, with no traffic shaping at all.

I moved to them from plusnet, where the customer support is terrible. Normal waiting time on the phone was about 45mins, tickets answered in about 4 days. Traffic shaping. Just over all poor.

Thought I would bring this up again.

Anyone got experience of Tiscali ?

They offer an "unlimited" 2MB service for £15, and for another £5 you get all your UK calls, day or night for free.

Sounds perfect for them - anyone got comments on Tiscali ?

Ive heard they are not good but then theres someone to say that about every isp.
I recommend you sign them upto homecall.co.uk which would only charge them 6.50 for the internet and includes free calls in the package like you mention.

They do dislike p2p but your parents dont sound too hard core to be affected by such things

Homecall's a Tiscali reseller at last count, so what you get won't be that far removed from Tiscali itself - Indian support, poor speeds, traffic shaping. If they're planning on running BBC online radio all day, they'll soon find out that the "unlimited" isn't what it says on the tin either.

To a point, you get what you pay for, but there's better than Tiscali for the money. There's Newnet (3GB/month for £12.99, or £11.99 if you pay for a year in advance) or IDNet (2GB/month for £17.99), both far and away better ISPs by comparison.
Tiscali have a forum on thinkbroadband (aka ADSLguide) as well.

Those sound like good recommendations. Homecall switched to reselling pipex though I heard they used to do tiscali I dont think they do now. I use them myself and so far no problems so long as your not a very heavy user I think its a good deal myself

Same applies - Pipex's support isn't great nor is their billing, and they're guilty of some pretty aggressive traffic shaping.
