Hi guys,

I'm a bit lost with the current range of offerings and brands at the moment and my mum is looking to upgrade her 21" Sony CRT which looks like a postage stamp in the corner of their living room!

She is looking for a 37 or 40" and my requirement is that is has 1080p. They obviously don't buy TVs very often so I want it to have some logenvity. It will be mainly used for SD, but my mum does like her films and a future BluRay player will probably find its way underneath when they are a bit more mainstream price wise. I'll be getting her a DivX/Xvid USB DVD upscaler too.

The budget here isn't great though at £500. She is willing to go towards £600 if it means getting something worthwhile as to my parents it is a lot of money and it's only available due to cashing in some holiday time she hasn't taken.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and we'd like to stick to Samsung Sony etc. She looked at a Hitachi and she didn't like the cheap feeling bezel.

Sorry to double post, I've been doing some digging.

The best option I am find so far is as follows:

Toshiba 37RV555DB
1080P
100Hz
18000:1 C/R (digitally aided no doubt).
£529.99 with Free delivery

Seems like a great deal to me. Is there anything better out there at this price point?

Also, 37" seems to be the ideal size for my parents room, so 40" is a redundant option now.

This is the problem. They will likely keep this TV for a long time compared to most, so the better the spec the more the investment for them would be worth it. I couldn't say if they'll ever get a HTPC or an alternate HD source too soon but I feel that course is beneficial.

I do understand the viewing distances and benefits of SD on plasma, but full HD does appeal, but then again, on a 37" it may not be that much difference?

The Panasonic TH-37PX8BA comes in at about the same price of the Toshiba. Is there anythign better for the money we can look at?
