Ok so, my current rig is:

lian li v600
i7 920 d0
fenriririr cooler
3x2gb ocz i7 ram
rampage 2 extreme
gtx 280 (would upgrade)

I want small, I mean, a tiny pc. but one that can hoof out the power I need (3d modelling,rendering/games, so high end gfx and high end cpu.)

I'm looking at that zotac h55, and an i7 860 (yes different socket to my d0)
then I'd be able to snug it into a tiny case (lian li q08 for instance which can take up to 300mm for a gfx card)

Would the 860 give me the same power as the 920? Most benchmarks seems equal with the 860 pulling ahead (on stock) a tiny bit. A heft OC wouldn't bother me, currently sat at stock anyway, wouldn't mind a nice 3.6+ oc from the 860 though?

My only other thought is a shuttle (im waiting on the j3...) but I can see that costing a bomb, and if im right triple channel ram doesnt reallly do much benefit? So I could just whack in 2x4gb and be done.

So whats the 860 like?
whats the zotac like? (anything else to rival it?) Just seen a dfi p55 itx, mmmm

Anyone else got anything similar?

the only problem with building smaller pcs is heat especially if you want to overclock, is there any particular reason of wanting to go as small as poss? also what budget you working on?

budget will be selling my rig mainly. Working out what the bits will cost for a scratch build (case, mobo, cpu, ram, keep my current corsair 620 modular psu? or if i sell mine as a rig then just buy a new one) then factor in what I can sell (everything tbh)

I hate big pc's, I hate big and loud pc's. Always have had an urge to try and get a tiny pc but for what I need, and now is the only time that it has been remotely possible. Oh, and the upgrade itch.

Also, the zotac looks naff, dfi it is!

Heat wise, I think with a decent cooler it should be ok if I keep the oc low (stock or 3.2ish) as these mitx's dont seem great on the oc front anyway and to be fair I'm not fussed. I'll probably forget about oc;ing and run it stock.

But being lower power usage the 860 should run cooler anyway, and the lian li looks to have decent cooling :)

lian li q08 for me, looks better and can house a big gfx card :)

why an i5 750? I currently use my i7. I don't want to step backwards.

i was just thinkin of budget tbh , just make sure you do your homework/measurements before clicking the buy button. good luck with the build :)

just looked at ram prices for 2x4gb, and cried inside.

from the money i sell my current i7 for it shouldnt cost that much more.
I'll have to wait though, for this lian li to become avail :)

(im a lian li v range fanboy and adore the drilled hole design. So its suckered me in)

slimline fan, plus a filter on the front so you cant see the garish fan, = possible 5870 lol.

ok so, 8gb is insanely too much. I'll stick to some low voltage 4gb stuffs!

Semi plan so far:
had some interest in my mobo/cpu/ram.

So If i hang on till end of uni (end of april) I'll see what this giga mitx is like, but probably go with the dfi) i7 870, 4gb ram, my psu and gfx card (for now) and wait for the case to come on to market :D

Should be good!

Just looking into this with a better eye for details,

lian li is 21l.
lanbox is 23 (houses an matx board, meaning insane cpu heatsinks and dual gfx cards...) eta end of april for EU

Even thought I like the look of the lian li, its making me ponder.
