Hi all,

First post here, but I have been reading almost as much you all contribute for sometime. I have been saving/working a lot of overtime for quite a while (and waiting for my trusty old laptop to age) and now I’m ready to blow it all a whole new set-up.

I am looking to take advantage of the Q6600 price drop on the 22nd July (as it seems so are a lot of people). The motherboard is a bit in excess of what I am specifying, but leaves significant room for future proofing (more ram, additional graphics card, overclocking, etc) and I don’t want to wait around for a P35 SLI or X38 board (then I would have to wait around for Penryn and the next great graphics card).

I was wondering if you could take a look and let me know your thoughts, maybe advise on potential conflicts, any tweaks you think I should consider, etc, e.g. will the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme fit in the motherboard/ case ok.

The Specification is follows:

Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

Processor Cooling - Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (Socket AM2/LGA775) Heatsink & Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin & Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

Memory - Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB)

Graphics Card - BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

Primary Hard Drive - 150 Gb Western Digital WD1500AHFD Raptor X, SATA150, 10000 rpm, 16MB Cache, 4.6 ms, NCQ

Second Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKB ATA-100 16MB Cache

Optical Drive - Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter

TV Card - Hauppauge WinTV HVR-4000 Freeview/Digital Satellite TV Tuner

Case - Antec P182 Super Midi Tower Case

Thanks in advance for any help!

Neil

Apart from money on the raptor it looks like a kick ass rig to me... ;) The rest is purely preference...

Do you need the dominator RAM and do you need the OC GTX?

The RAM I am re-looking at. Consideing OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2, which is £93.99 (inc VAT) at the moment, which is £35 saving. Hopefully its the same when the 22nd July arrives.

There isn't many plain GTX's to go for, especially not one with a decent warranty attached. Therefore I am happy to pay a little more for the graphics card above (its only £25ish more than the Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI which has two year warranty compared to lifetime for the BFG).
