I have contemplated Sandy Bridge but was very put off by DRM and the amount of chips that have been dying, but would it be worthwhile compared to the build I put together?

As long as you don't put silly volts in or mess with the BLK speed, then the CPU will be fine. And yes, it will be a lot more worthwhile.
