i apologise if there are any spelling errors etc, had a tiny bit to drink.

basically- i like photography, get a lot of satisfaction from it :) i have a basic olympus digital camera, but its not so much the pictures i like to take as the effects- blur, polaroid, negative, sepia etc... would this mean i should look to buy a new camera, or will i just need a computer programme to edit the photos with?

spanks!! :)

Even the basicist camera sould be ok for the things you mention. So...

Cheap answer:
The Gimp

More expensive answer:
Corel Paint Shop Pro X *not XI - not nice to use*

Expensive as hell answer:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 or 3

Or...you could get a new camera with all those built in, but then you would not have the ability to go to an unmolested version of the photo and try something different.

Yes I was about to mention that. Photoshop Elements 5 is out now. There are actually a few sites selling it at a discount at the moment too. I've got version 4 and it does most of what you need and will definately cover you for the effects you're talking about.

I seem to remember a few years ago that PhotoShop Elements was the software package which came with some new digital cameras?

I don't know if this is still the case?

Of course with photoShop you can always get many 3rd party (freeware) plugins too!

isnt that difficult to use? even our photography students cant always master that

There are lots of books about PhotoShop, more so than any other similar program. I went to college to learn the program but I learnt a lot more from reading books on the subject. Learn Photoshop in 24 hours etc. I've bought a couple of books over the years but usually I get them from the local library.
