Hi All

After some spec help for a RIP server. The current machine isnt up to it. The server has 2 large format digital printers, a HP5000 and a Mimaki Digital Solvent machine.

Each machine needs at least one processor. Basically we just need a machine that can speed through rendering the jobs. Some jobs at the moment take literally days, although they can be 10 metres wide ;)

Any ideas would be appreciated. Budget is no more than 2k, less if possible.

Thanks
Aaron

It prints 60 inches wide, but on 100 metre rolls. The problem is that it has to rip the whole document first.

The current rip server is an old rubbish spec dell.
P4 3.4ghz
2gb Ram
250gb Hard drive

It was ok when we had just one machine and didnt really do much in the way of mega large format work, now though it is always maxed out.

We just need as much raw processing power as possible, no fancy graphics cards or anything

how are you printing? is it seperates or is it a multi colour process?

we used a sprightly dual processor setup with shedloads or ram on nt4 back in the dark ages when i worked in repro to feed our avantra :)

i wont bore you with the specs (it were 6-7 years ago)

tbh 2k is an adequate budget for your needs although not sure on the apps you will be using more info would be handy does it support multi-threading? what os are you currently running?

etc etc

just read your post above, :)

phone nvidia can a 8800 gt handle your ripping :) :) :)

in all seriousness as he says dual processor opty setup would offer best bang for buck,

whats size of files are you ripping on average?

yeah that is nice budget especially when you dont need a decent gfx card either. if we talking normal cpus could this be a genuine reason to recomend the quadcore kentsfield ?

A Mac Pro with dual dual core Woodcrest Xeons with about 4 GiB RAM would be blazing fast and would come with a dandy warranty. It could run Windows, OS X, or the *NIX of your chouce if there are performance improvements that can be had by changing platforms (I know little about the software you use, you make the call). When Kentsfield comes out you could upgrade to dual quad core.

We used to have a dual cpu NT beasty, but it just starting struggling, so we moved to the dell as a stop gap.

This is the spec for onyx http://onyxgfx.com/solutions_ripcenter.html

Not sure about the mac route, I did look at it, not too sure about drivers etc.

Yeah, basically we just need a beasty PC, no special hardware really.

It needs to be the most powerful machine we can get for the money, as it will have to last a few years ;)

Thanks for all the input so far

Drivers for what? Boot Camp comes with all the necessary Windows drivers for the machine hardware. Peripherals will see it as it were any other Windows PC, becasue that's what it is when it's running Windows. As such whatever drivers you're currently using will continue to work. I just want to be sure you understand the proposition.
