Morning all!

I've been tasked with putting together a PC for my brother as he heads off to university, but apart from my recent home server build I haven't built a general purpose machine since my P4, so I'm a bit out of the loop.

My brother will need the PC for general uni duties like writing up notes and browsing the interwebs, he's doing a physics course with a heavy programming and maths bent so he could use a bit of maths grunt (though I'd imagine any non-budget CPU would be fine). He's also a music nut and so will use some other bits of hardware to record keyboard and guitar music, again so a bit of grunt required for processing. Lastly he is a gamer but not a graphics nut-case, so nothing extreme required. So here's what we'll need:

  • CPU (stock cooler is okay)
  • Motherboard
  • RAM
  • Grahpics card
  • HDD
  • DVD-RW
  • PSU
  • Case
  • Case cooling
  • Windows 7 OS
  • Anything else I've forgotten?

We've got a screen, keyboard, mouse and speakers. Small form factor would be a bonus.

consider these upgrades if you can stretch the budget:

Phenom II x4 955 BE
Powercolor hd4890
Be Quiet Straight Power 650W psu

The above looks like a good bang per buck, SFF will cost a tidy bit more i believe and will have to compromise on the performance so id go with the above spec.

Agreed, not sure if Win7 is still available on pre-order for £49.99 anywhere, but if it is you could get that and take £7 of the savings to get a Radeon 4890 instead.

This raises another point of course, Win7 isn't released for another 6 weeks by which time he'll presumably be at uni and wanting to have a computer to use? May need to look into using an evaluation version until then.

Thanks for the input so far guys.

It's slightly dodgy but I have the RTM build in my possession from a legal source but no key I could legally use (I don't think work would like me using our Enterprise key!), so I might use the rearm function until Windows 7 is officially released.

Any thoughts on a Intel Core2 based build?

microsoft still allows you to register for a new key untill october 21st 2009, hope this helps.
