Hey, one of my friends asked me to help spec him a computer which is capable of 3D gaming and play games at max resolution and details, anti aliasing etc, but also he wants to be able to do some multi media work like video editing and stuff.

He already has these:-
CD/DVD drive
Keyboard and mouse

So far I have specced him this, I'm a bit unsure on what cooler would be best, as he plans to overclock quite heavily, hopefully reaching up to 4.0ghz

His spec budget is 1550MAX, any suggestions/improvments are welcomed, but please explain your reasons

Has the op changed the ram as the cooler should clear them as these have no heatsinks.

and I read a post earlier from a ocuk shop staff member that the Noctua may not clear that ram, he suggested the Meglahelm cooler.

Correct me if im wrong but wasnt that for the large OCZ reaper RAM? Maybe even the patriot RAM?

But im not 100%

Is such a powerful PSU needed? I would only think thats needed if he has 480's in SLI

The Corsair will clear the cooler as RJK mentioned in a previous thread, the Geil spced above should as they from what I am aware are the same height.

The Viper most probably wont as these have a large heat sink.

He wants to SLI 480's in the future, as games become more demanding

Thanks for the suggestions about the megahalems cooler and the corsair instead, I will look into it, is the noctua not suitable for this sort of system then?

so is the corsair h50 really worth the 60quid it costs?

the noctua is a beast, but also rather large from the base up.

the megahelm is slender at the bottom, but you need to buy a fan for it.

the corsair pump assembly is small and will just fit without issue.

That CPU will easily reach 4GHz mate :p I wouldn't even call that a heavy overclock for that chip, given how well the i7s clock :)

The Megahalems is a fantastic cooler with two good fans (as you can see below I own one). On my 920, I am on 4GHz stable, never really passes 85C on Prime full load. Around 35-40C idle, 60C or so when gaming :)

If it was my system, I would swap that PSU for either a Corsair one or a BeQuiet one :)

what are the disadvantages of not having RAM with a heatsink? less overclockability?

maybe a smaller cooler would be more beneficial, i just checked a youtube video of this thing, ITS ****ING HUGE

Even with the Megahalems, it was a struggle getting the fans on with the Patriot RAM in with those heatsinks. So anything bigger would just be insane! I don't think anyone needs a cooler that massive :p The Megahalems is simply great :)
