Hey guys,

Well, im a bit of a lurker on the forums to be honest, enjoy reading in most of the sub forums etc, but don't post that much.

I was looking at building a new PC a few months back ( was going for Devil's Canyon ) but with X99 just around the corner, I decided to wait.

Hi,

Looks good,

This cooler is cheaper - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-065-CM - and works with Win8.1 without issues.

Faster SSD - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-012-SH

This 4K claims a 1ms Grey to Grey response - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-072-AC&groupid=17&catid=1895

An 850W version of that PSU will be more than enough.

Are the odd red cables just to add a touch of colour?

But as with anything by January prices and components will have changed.

Hey Stulid

Thanks for this mate.

Yeah, when I was choosing the components, I noticed it was pretty much black / white - thought I would chuck some red in with the odd cables, and then use the red rings on the fans :D

Lol & the prices, I know trust me :D I see my basket total change every couple of days.

I'll be looking at it all again in January, I guess there will be new stuff in by then possibly, so might be changing a few things anyway.

Think this will be ok for 4k then, or will any of my choices make it struggle ?

Normally my rig lasts me around 4 - 5 years, just normally switching out the GPU or something - so want to make sure im buying the right stuff :D

I personally think 4K is still immature and a 1440P screen will be.

A) Easier to drive at max game settings.
b) Cheaper (use a single 970/980).

Yeah just for gaming really, but because I have to run my rig for 4 - 5 years, it's probably a little overkill ( just so for the next few years, it will handle the games I chuck at it )

As you can see from my sig, pretty old rig im running now. My pump died, so had to strip out the watercooling, and just whack it back on air.

I've changed my mind from 1440p to 4k several times over the last couple of weeks. I've had TN and VA panels, and actually really wanted an IPS ( if its not going to be crap for gaming )

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

I'm still really undecided on the 4k / 1440p thing. I was actually drooling over the 40" Philips VA panel, but that was way over my budget :D

I'm guessing TN / VA panels have probably improved over the years anyway - with regards to color, im running a BenQ 24xx something at the moment, 1080p.

Hmmm,

I have a 27" ASUS PLS next to a AOC 144Hz TN screen.

The difference in colours/contrast etc is obvious when they have the same thing on screen.

But!!! if you dont know the difference or can see it, would you know about it;)

Yeah that's true I suppose.

I was going to keep one of my BenQ screens, and just have it portrait, just so I can have music player / TS etc running on that while I game on the main screen. So yeah, not having an IPS or variant next to a TN panel, I wouldn't notice any difference.

I think you guys might of convinced me to be honest, I just don't want to spend all this cash, and then be disappointed because it just doesn't give the performance in 4k I was expecting. I'm pretty sure just having a step up to 1440 is going to give me a noticeable improvement from what I'm currently used to.

Back to the drawing board lol !!!

Need a 1440p monitor now I guess, decent for gaming ( if I was going TN - then I guess something over 60hz would be nice ) but without it being over the £400 - £450 mark lol.

Gsync is also a feature that you might like.

But they are all 1080P (which a single GTX970 will easily run) or spend £560-600 for a Acer 4K or ROG swift 1440P.

Yeah I was just looking at the ROG.

Ok, so now im thinking. Seeing as this would be 1440p rather than 4k, what would be the better setup ?

1 x 980
or still the 2 x 970

Just wondering if I can offset the increase in cost for the monitor by maybe dropping the SLi option and just grabbing a single 980 -but then, don't know if it will struggle to push 1440 ?

A single 980 will run 1440P, as its Gsync it also helps smooth out the action and stutters. Even a GTX970 will do well.

That's definitely thrown a curve ball in to the equation :D thanks Lee.

Arrrghhhh im sure it wasn't this hard when I built my last rig lol.

Sometime early next year ( I dont know exactly when) AMD will release the 300 series cards.

Then Freesync (amd version of Gsync) monitors maybe a bit more regularly available (theres only one or two on the market and thats with a firmware update)

I've had a jig around of the parts. The Phantek case @ £200 was probably a bit steep to be honest.

Still keen on the 970 SLi option, so I've got it down to this now to include the ROG screen :
