Would this actually make a difference to my sound quality?

I'm currently using 2.1 connected to my TV which in turn is connected to desktop by HDMI

I guess the usefulness of a dedicated sound card comes down to the speaker set up people have attached to there PC.

I stopped getting separate sound cards many years ago as the ones on motherboards were just as good for my small surround sound set up.

If you got the money to spend and can buy the speakers to match I am sure its awesome.

Yes Jack the quality will improve and you will more than likely find that the volume is easier to control.

How much it will improve it by depends on your speakers though, a £20 2.1 set up will not respond as well as a £150 2.1 set up.
