hi there,

I'm after a gfx card that's low on power consumption and quite cheap if poss. I only need it to play the odd high res movie file and encode/remux the odd movie file as well.

I'm thinking of one of the 5xxx series cards.. but which one?

I think even the 5770 would be overkill for me (i won't be playing any games) Any ideas? thanks!

Actually a 4350 or 5450 512MB would suffice if not gaming. According Custom PC magazine, it is a common misconcept that watching and working with video on a PC require a powerful GPU; but the fact is that even low end graphic card nowadays got the same hardware decoding feature as the more expensive cards, and most video encoding tasks are performed entirely by the CPU. Custom PC magazine actually recommended the 4350 for the media editing PC build (HD5000 series was not yet out at the time).

5450 do however have better audio processor features than 4350, if you use the HDMI to output audio from the graphic card.
