my folks are after a replacement for their ageing laptop ( athlon xpmobile 1800+ with 512mb ram, 60gig hdd ) their budget is 500 quid and i have suggested the following spec:

how does that spec look, they will be using it mainly for word, photos, web.

TBH, if they are not doing anything more than word, then even that setup is a bit overkill.

You could save them a bit of money by grabbing the E2160 rather than the 4xxx or 6xxx series conroes, and just overclock it (I got my friends to 3GHZ easy with the retail cooler, at low voltages too).

Other than that, you could always get them another laptop, the obvous names like Dell come to mind there.

One thing you don't mention if they already have a monitor, you didn't spec one, however you mentioned their previous system was a laptop, so they would not have an exterior monitor and would obviously be using the built in TFT.

they have monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse.

Fair comment on the overkill, though i think anything brand new these days is gonna be overkill for word and web.

So long as the Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 would do the trick.. thats what i would get them.
