Spec'ing up a new build...new PSU or a couple of adapters?

So my current setup is an Abit AV-8 Third Eye with a AMD Clawhammer FX-53 on Socket 939, and to upgrade I need to get all new RAM, CPU and m/b...and I've just been made aware of the new plugs that power supplies have (so yay! extra money to spend).

The PSU I have has a 20+4 pin main plug and the 4-pin plug for the CPU, but newer PSU's have 4/8 pin plugs and PCI-E plugs as well.

So my question is, will I be able to get away with using plug adapters until I can get a new (silent & more powerful) PSU? I won't be doing any overclocking for a while and running a single graphics card.

I'm planning to get an HD 4850 or 4870 graphics card, does that require a separate power plug, and what type?

Sorry if this sounds like being cheap, but it's either use adapters for a month or so and then get the new PSU, or put everything on hold for a month to save up the extra cash for a new PSU. I'm already spending enough just to get new internals!

I'm pretty sure it's a 400W, generic brand from PC World. I'll be moving to a Wolfdale CPU, 4GB RAM, P45 mobo and the Radeon 4870 graphics card I mentioned above. I'm aware it's probably a bit weak :( but I'm just a bit impatient ... if I have to I can save up for a kick-butt PSU and while I'm at it get slightly better gear.

I'd say save a bit more up and get the new psu aswell, you'll be wanting one offering around 600 -650W to have some reserve capacity.

hmmm yeah I've got my eye on an OCZ unit, think the whole build will have to wait a few weeks longer...lets my account recover from Christmas, at least! :)

thanks for the advice!
