A colleague of mine commented on how average speed cameras can't catch you if you change lanes, which I was intitally suprised it, but it kind of makes sense

Is this true ?

As true as the "fact" that the world is flat, the moon is made of cheese and I'm a Vicar. ;)

possibly due to some lanes being shorter than others (a sweeping corner etc..) or you being able to 'apex' a road?

The distance difference would probably be tiny, but you know how they have to cover for every circumstance...

no the problem was that there was a camera for each lane

and if you were recorded entering a zone on camera A, camera B couldnt see the record of the entry. It effectively had never seen you before so thus you avoided the fine by changing lanes

i would imagine its not a hard one to fix, just obviously required some work on the system to sort it. It was true, but i imagine they've fixed the flaw by now.

The easiest way to sort it was to have one camera per lane. So if you see 3 cameras on a gantry, chances are you cant use the change-lane trick.

On the A2 roadworks near me, they only have one camera per gantry. However, Im not gonna start speeding through and changing lanes just to see if it works.

Its due to legislation that prevents more than speed camera's being networked together.

The police get round it at roadworks ect by having overlapping sets of cameras, confusing anyone who know's about the loophole as the driver doesn't know if theyre exiting the first pair or entering another pair.

As has been mentioned, the SPECS system when type approved by the government for speed enforcement was not approved for multi-lane use - the system is perfectly capable, and will "catch" you. They just can't do anything about it.

Not sure if they have approved it for multi-lane use yet.

Judging by the number of my workmates who've been done on motorways, I'd say they've fixed the lane issue, hence my initial comment. ;)

To be fair, most of your workmates will be sitting in the same lane through SPECS areas. I've rarely seen a lorry change lanes during these periods, as most of the time the lorries in the inside lane are the ones travelling the fastest! :p

Also still see that they are forward facing (well the ones i see anyway) , so bikes can get away with it still lol, in theory though if a bike or car travelled on on the white lines would that confuse the cameras lol? :p

It's true, this is because "networks" of these cameras are not allowed to issue a penalty.

They can only work in pairs.

There are testing some networks of them in London's estates, but they can't issue a fine on them.

The lorries are probably doing the stated speed limit. They just set the cruise control and keep on rolling - it's what I do when I'm in a truck. ;)

It's the centre lane numpties who insist on driving through speed traps at an indicated ~5mph slower than the posted limit.

As far as I was aware the idea of lane changing was never proved at all.
The makers claimed it was never true (well of course they would say that).
I guess it's up to you if you want to risk it or not.
Give it a go - do the whole stretch of an average speed area at around 85mph and change lane at each camera - let us know your results.
