Hi,

I am in the process of building a new windows 7-based dedicated home server and would be grateful for some advice for parts.

It is going to be running Argus TV (backend only) and Mediabrowser three and is going to be run headless. It therefore does need particularly good graphics but as Mediabrowser 3 can stream to tablets, the server has to be capable of a little bit of transcoding.

Thus far, I already have the drives (3 x 2TB, 1 x 1TB and a SSD for the OS), the Case and 12 GB of RAM (2 x 4GB and 2 x 2GB).

I therefore need a CPU, motherboard and PSU.

As far as PSUs go - this looks perfect as it is efficient and quiet:

What do you guys think? Any reason not to go for this?

As far as the CPU/Motherboard, my logical choice was that Celeron/Pentium Haswell would be sufficient.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much that.

Sorry if this complicates things but I should have really added a few further bits of information.

Firstly, I also have two Hauppauge tuner cards for the new server (in case this is relevant for power usage reasons).

My current Desktop (running Linux Mint) is as follows:

* MSI H67MA-E35-B3 Socket 1155
* i3-2105
* 8GB RAM
* Antec 400W High Current Gamer PSU
* Linux running off USB stick

What my ultimate goal is, is to perhaps re-use any of the above parts for the server (if recommended) but ultimately end up with a desktop PC and a server.

For example, would the i3-2105 be better served in the serer and I should put a Haswell chip in the desktop? Or should I buy a better 1155 board for the server, put the i3-2105 on that and perhaps use the existing board with an Ivy Bridge CPU for the Desktop?

Based upon my current Desktop, I should get an SSD too - running off a USB should only have been temporary (the SSD I currently have is a 64GB crucial M4).

Thanks

Also - all RAM is indeed DDR3.

Honestly I think the whole lot would work pretty well as a home server! I'd probaby say use the current setup in the server and get yourself a nice new Haswell for your main PC.

* MSI H67MA-E35-B3 Socket 1155
* i3-2105
* 8GB RAM
* Antec 400W High Current Gamer PSU
* Linux running off USB stick

This will be fine for your server, use the ram in your new desktop and replace it with the 2x2GB set.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the above.

After messing around trying to find a suitable potential space to put my new server, I reached the conclusion that the only place I am going to be able to keep it (taking into account the WAF) is going to be in my living room under the main TV.

This changes everything as I might as well use the new PC for playback as well - i.e. a standalone HTPC.

Ultimately, what I am now looking for is a motherboard/CPU combo that has the following:

* At least 6sata ports
* Good graphics (potentially good enought to experiment with MADvr
* WakeOnLan ability - given that the PC is going to be used as a server too
* Efficient
* 4 RAM Slots

Given the above, what do you guys recommend now?
