Hi all
I currently have a 22" monitor which sits about 20" distance on my desk (due to that being the best focus distance for my reading glasses).
I am thinking of upgrading to the Dell S2716DG but a monitor that size at the distance I am currently viewing would be unusable.
What is the ideal view distance for the Dell S2716DG? I would have thought about 1M or so?
Now on to my question, if i was to visit an optician can they supply me with spectacles more suited to viewing monitors at a set distance rather than reading distance?
I know I should really be asking these questions to an optician but I was just wondering if anyone else has had experience of such matters :)

My Dell2716DG monitor is an arms length away - also even though the monitor is bigger in size, the resolution you'll be using (2560 x 1400) is different to what you'll normally be used to (1920 x 1080?). Icons and text much more smaller in size!

I have that monitor and wear glasses and just measuring the distance that I find I tend to naturally relax to it is about 29-30" (~75cm) viewing distance - when gaming I usually pull in about a couple of inches closer.

(This is roughly arm's length when gaming and a little more when otherwise using it).

My eyes are -1.0, for this the "fully relaxed" in-focus distance calculates to about 1 meter - so I keep my monitor at such - so my eyes are fully relaxed but still in focus without need for glasses. This precludes me from using too large monitors, because I will have to place them too far.
Currently using 32" one and it looks to be just on edge - anything bigger probably wouldn't work.

Regardless of the size of my screen(s), I position them so that if I stretch out my arm, my fingertips brush the surface. I suspect this is the typical office-user viewing distance. Anything up to 30" is quite comfortable at this range, and I'd be surprised if you felt the need to push a 27" back to double that distance. Pretty sure it would fill less of your viewing angle, which seems rather pointless :)

Cheers for the feedback guys. Got an appointment at the opticians tomorrow (this getting old lark ain't all it's cracked up to be lol).
So, if I stick my arm out in front of me and tell the optician, "This is the distance I want to focus at", I should be all set for a 27" monitor?

Your answer is yes, a prescription can have different 'strengths depending on what you need. I have three pairs of glasses, driving and TV, reading and an intermediate pair for monitor use.
I have also had a pair that I used for very close work while model making, I have poor eyes :-)
Andi.

Cheers all, I went to the opticians today and explained what I wanted. He said it's a very common query. Had a thorough eye test and both a pair of reading and monitor glasses will be ready for me by next Wednesday :)

I still have difficulty getting my head around the resolution difference and how it affects the size of text etc. Having never seen a, 2560 x 1400 monitor in the flesh to be able to compare it to my current 1920 x 1080 Monitor.
How does this work in games?
