Speculative Work/ Work experience requests

Hi all its been a while since I made a thread so I thought it was high time to rectify that!

Basically I just finished my first degree at UCL and am going to do a masters at UCL starting at the end of september.

I have from now until the end of september to fill up and I need to get something to put in my C.V.

So, that's all well and good for you Voltar, you might be thinking.

I haven't applied for summer vacation schemes etc due to not knowing my next step in life; I do now as I'm doing masters.
However, I am unsure as to how it looks to send around random emails or letters asking people to let me into their domains for as long as they will have me or to even pay me for the privilege.

This is extremely vague, yes, however I was thinking about it all and was getting a bit lost so was wondering if any of you have been in similar situations or did work experience etc and whether you could share your experiences thereof?
For example did you know someone who knew someone who got you two weeks somewhere?
Or maybe you just managed to work something out for yourself? Did you phone around or did you send letters and C.V.s out to people?

I know many will think what a numpty this Voltar must be, but I really don't have much of a clue when it comes to this. I have done a fair bit of work experience before, just to be clear that I'm not a total noob or some loafer. The reason why I'm not doing the same as before is because I'd like to try new places: perfectly reasonable and justifiable I think.
Some of you will be of the school of thought that you can only get told 'no' and there is no harm in trying.

I'm interested in heading into a solicitor's office or even as a paralegal.

Basically, I am interested in how you organized yours no matter what it was, to help me get the ball rolling.

If any of you have worked on a temporary basis as a paralegal then I'm particularly interested.

Also if any of you have just gone and volunteered doing something for a week I'm equally curious.

This is a serious thread and I would appreciate any sensible advice or sharing of experiences.

This, i sent out a cover letter and my cv on speculation for my placement to get better roles than what was offered for standard clinical psychology. Ended getting an honorary position in neuropsychiatry for 13 months, finishing in 2 weeks with a guaranteed journal publication and an unbeatable experience.
 
Gumtree. Looking for people who need people.

Volunteer work.

Sending CVs and enquiring letters to companies.
 
I sent out loads of letters, I explained who I was, where I wanted to go in life. But kept it short and sweet.

Don't expect to get inundated with offers, but one may get one or two.
 
I'd seriously consider voluntary work, esp. during a recession - shows an employer many good qualities about you and that you want to help people/animals, and as you say its only until September.

Plus the people at the volunteering may know people.

Up until 3 months ago, amongst my other jobs, I was the Work Experience Co-Ordinator for the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but I now sit next to the woman who does it and helped her to re-write the Trust policy.
I am also responsible for getting 100 Apprentices into work Experience all year round so I have quite a bit of experience.
I also got my job because I did work experience and they kept me.

I'll re-iterate what others have said -
You have to knock on doors yourself because nobody is going to put it in your lap.
Volunteering is also an excellent move.
You could try your local hospital because they will have a large legal department but if volunteering you may need a CRB.
