So I got caught doing 37 in a 30 by a mobile unit. Of course such a reckless speed resulted in the death of every child within a mile radius, but on top of that I was given the choice of one of these Speed Awareness Courses. I have decided to go for it instead of the points, but what can I expect?

I'm imagining it to be a condescending and patronising lecture full of the same 'speed kills mmkay' propaganda as the stupid Kill Your Speed campaign, is this the case?

Also, lol stockhausen in advance.

a lot of patronising, making out you kill children, some videos, more patronising and no buffet..

Still better than 3 points at my age.

I had a 'Driving Awareness Couse' in Hampshire as apposed to the national 'Speed Awareness Couse' - It was quite informative in some aspects. Between the lines it was showing you when/where it isn't appropriate to speed with actual hazards as apposed to what the speed limit actually is.

I went on one for the same 'crime'

It was actually pretty good and not at all condescending IMO. I think I was the only one under 40 at mine when i was 19!

You will have some bint who will continue to declare her innocense.

I went on one a couple of years ago. It was pretty good, seemed quite light hearted.

Most of the content seemed to focus on hazard awareness, not much lecturing on speeding in all honesty.

edit... Just seen Muffin's post. I'm not sure whether mine was a Speed Awareness or Driving Awareness course.

Went to a speed awareness course near bracknell a few years ago mind. Not patronising at all. Basically them saying speed in itself isn't dangerous, but the speed limits the speed limit so do yourself a favour.

Watched a couple of videos, learnt that only 25% of speed camera in the thames valley area are active at any given time. Completed a hazard test and learnt I brake far to late and went home.

I don't know if its the same in other counties but I know that my driving instructor takes offenders out in his car and evaluates their driving, they also have a lecture on hazard awareness with statistics etc as above.

Doesn't sound so bad then. Better than the three points I suppose....

The only thing I will add is my brother went on a course last month and he was given homework to complete within a set time frame. Apparently it wasn't anything too taxing but had to be completed online.

I think its a joke, I over heard this guy in my college say he got caught doing 105Mph in a 50, he went for the speed awareness course and got £60 off his car insurance........ WTF

That speed would result in an automatic ban. He may well get £60 off his insurance, but I bet he's paying through the **** with a ban on his record.

The course isn't too bad, but you will be worried about the other people out on the roads with you afterwards.
One of the questions was about speed limits on dual carriageways, quite a few people in the room though that it was 50mph in a normal car.

Another was about stopping distances. Ie would you be able to stop if you were travelling at 30mph past a parked bus and a child (isn't it always) stepped out in to the road from the front of the bus as you were passing the rear.
This is just after he had told the whole class about stopping distances. Basically there were only a couple of people who thought they would not be able to stop in time.

Length of bus ~13m
Stopping time @30mph 23m (according to the government)

You sure its not a case of he did the course instead of taking the points and then come insurance renewal time his insurance went down by 60 quid because he had an extra years no claims and no points on his licence.

Speed awareness courses are only offered to those within a certain percentile of the speedlimit they were breaking.

He's talking **** and probably try to make the fact he got caught doing 36 sound cooler.

moral of the story is, never believe what some chump tells you at college

Number 1) you wont get offered a course for anything over over about 10 % over the limt + 5mph (or there abouts)

Number 2)At 25mph over the posted limit, you can be sent to court and have a magistrate impose a rather large fine and some points ,or a driving ban.

For doing 55mph over the limit, there is no "could" he "would definately" have been sent to court, and possibly even charged with dangerous driving if the area of the 50mph limit was built up.

Number 3) you dont get an insurance discount for doing a speed awareness course.

What actually happened :

He did 58mph in a 50, got offered a speed awareness course, and his insurance renewal was £60 cheaper because he got 1 extra years NCB and nothing to do with the course ..

I did one of these, 36 in a 30 (....), showed me some pictures of dead people, belittled me a bit, holier than thou speeches and a form to complete, oh and £60 for the privilege.

retarded in the extreme but a cleaner license as a result.
