Speed awareness courses?

FWIW the threshold for a speed awareness course depends on which police force it is. Until the last budget the threshold tended to be around 10%+3, e.g. 36 in a 30, 47 in a 40 and so on.

However they are slowly creeping up since the local council makes money off the speed awareness courses, but not off the fines. Due to the budget cuts the councils are leaning on the camera partnerships to send more people on courses if they want to continue receiving funding.

You wont get one for 48 in a 30 though

What makes me laugh is people say do 30 in a 30. Who actually does 30? I mean come on, really? Can you honestly put hand on heart and say you do 30 in a 30 all the time?! "All the time?!" If you do, then youre a liar. Theres always a queue of cars all bunched up behind that annoying someone actually doing 30, the rest of the time I reckon most people do at least 35 or higher.

I do, am always paranoid about getting caught so I religiously stick to 30, I do the same in 40mph limits also. I'll only put my foot down in 50mph+ limits.

Burnsey isn't a full time police man.

That's all he gets then:

:p

Sounds about right then. Has to be under 40. How was the course? Boring and mind numbing?

Pretty much, bunch of house-wives and sales reps questioning the purpose of being there.

I thought avoiding the three points was worth it!

Basically had group discussions about driving attitude, speed awareness, driving to the conditions, hazard perception etc. We watched some trailers they run in Ireland about speed-related deaths which was pretty graphic.

The ironic thing was, I got a puncture on my way to the course so I had to do an F1-like tyre change at the side of the road and then speed all the way there. :o

Yes?

Pfft. 36mph and under, you shouldn't even be stopped IMO. 37-38mph... then yes.

I think the speed limit should depend on your cars stopping distance. A manky 1.2 1999 thing will probably stop in the same distance doing 30mph than a classy M3 would going at 50mph. I have a feeling I might be alone in these views. But hey... who's to argue. Just stick a big sign on top of your car. "I can do 46mph in a 30 because my cars cooler than yours."

and if you dont see the danger you hit it at what ever speed you were going....

In Hampshire the rules for Driver Awareness Training is 10% + 3MPH to 10% + 6mph. So in a 30mph zone, it's 36-39 mph.

As I found out two years ago when flashed doing 80 on a dual carriageway. :( They even told us on the course that the cutoff was 10%+2. One of the guys running the course was my old driving instructor. Embarassing for all. :D

I didn't know you lived in Winchester...:o

Something that is increasingly likely to be a problem as more and more drivers are constantly checking their speedo, paranoid about getting flashed for doing 32 in a 30.

...or maybe just because they're writing a text message

I know someone who was caught doing 96 on the motorway, he was offered a £60 fine and a course. The letter never actually came through mind.
