I'm back baby!
A work colleague states that speed cameras no longer have to be particularly visible (I know there's sites around that show ones that aren't, but AFAIK they're meant to be).

Two near him have gone up and are grey, there's on one my route to work the same. I thought it just wasn't painted up yet.

Any truth in this? He says this began at the start of this month, but I don't remember seeing anything of that sort.

Two speed cameras have gone up recently that I can remember, they only painted the lines a few days ago I think. Both are yellow.

I thought it was that local authorities now have to pay for them themselves.

There is currently no legal requirement for speed cameras to be made visible and a speeding offence is not invalidated if they are not.

The latest Department for Transport guidance recommends speed cameras should be yellow, marked with warning signs and only sited at accident black spots.
Sounds like it's merely a guideline to make them visible but not compulsory.

Surely the white lines are still a massive give away? Grey or yellow you still should see it really anyway, hidden behind things fair enough but as I said you'd still see the lines.

I'm not particually worried.

Speed cameras have never had to be painted yellow - it's just ACPO guidelines.

The same as they don't have to give you 10%+2 either - also only ACPO guidelines.

I haven't seen the news of this myself, but like you a work colleague of mine was ranting about it on Monday. He'd seen something in the weekend papers I think. It seems there's been a change in the rules/guidelines.

I've gone past a few areas in Bournemouth where there are just the lines painted on the road, no speed camera in sight. Needless to say, the majority of people slam their breaks on in panic and then realise theres nothing by the side of the road.

They've swapped a speed camera for one of those "Your Speed" signs near me.

The speed camera was constantly getting nicked, burnt, blown up, expanding foamed, covered, sprayed etc. It was in a silly place on a steep hill pointing downwards and it is certainly not an accident blackspot.

I'm certainly not keen on the big brother "we're watching you" feeling. Ok white markings on the road are a givaway but most idiots look for the camera and are gonna get caught out. Easy money for our local authorities :(

Most new units are Tuvelos, and they just need the three small white lines next to the camera - which are much harder to see. And as stated, the rules were changed at least a year ago so that cameras don't need to be obvious any more.

However....
Hidden speed cameras could return to our roads in the near future after Britain's top traffic police officer spoke out. He explained that they would save more lives as drivers would not be able to predict where they could be caught.

Meredydd Hughes, Chief Constable of South Yorkshire and head of roads policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers, explained 'I have always thought it strange that speed cameras were so easily identified. We need to think about whether greater compliance will be delivered by using technology in a less conspicuous way. I might put up Neighbourhood Watch signs but I don't tell burglars when I am specifically running an anticrime operation.'

I was on an A-road in Norfolk last week which had them every few hundred metres with no camera. Not sure if theyre meant to trick drivers or if theyre used by mobile gatsos or something.

think also they move the cameras but leave the lines painted. Or paint the lines but dont put the camera in yet.

One place i know had a camera for ages, then the camera left for a few months, lines stayed. then the camera was back again

Same here, people go around the block driving past quicker and quicker trying to break their top score.

Arf.

We have got a lot of those ones which light up going "Watch your Speed!". The more often than not make me jump! :(

I get unlimited free updates on my sat nav, not a problem for me :D
Until you go past a new one that hasnt maade it on to the database. Ive got camera locations on mine, but if anything it makes you slightly less aware as you arent looking for them yourself.

Yeah I saw that bit :) What an utter tool that policeman is for saying that. The government recognised the obvious truth a few years ago, that making them visible is the best way of getting drivers to adhere to the speed limit. The only possible reason for hiding them is to maximise revenue, not maximise safety.
