Speed comparison websites

Are there any websites that give an indication of what speeds you will reliably get depending on connection type and general location?

For example Speedtest knows where the test is being run from (or at least the general area) and what connection type you are using. Is there an option to compare locally on the website?

Note - I'm not in the UK so I can't use things like the BT checker.

Essentially my problem is I have two choices - Cable or DSL and multiple over the top providers. Currently I'm paying for 30 down and 5 up but am getting about 2 (two) down and 5 up on cable. I'd like to get an idea if switching to DSL will give me a decent connection speed, but would rather see real world results before paying money to get it swapped over, then finding out it's as bad/worse (anecdotal comments suggest it's worse than cable).

So yeah, are there any speed checking sites that allow you to get an idea of what speed you would get?

The technology is still the same no matter where you are in the world. What ISP are you looking at moving to and which package? They'll still be using either xDSL technology, copper or fibre etc...

EDIT: Just to clarify your actual question is impossible to answer without more info. As we have no idea what country you are in, what ISPs are available or why you're not achieving the speeds you should be getting with your current provider.

Not sure what you mean by that?

There are two distinct systems here, Cable and DSL. Contention/throughput on each are mutually exclusive, just like BT and Virgin Cable in the UK. I'm asking if there is a site that allows you to see real world results from people in your area so I can see whether Cable or DSL can provide higher average speeds (or at least closer to the nominal speeds). I'm not asking which has higher theoretical speeds. :)

I understand exact speeds I would get will be dependent on time of day, routing of service and other factors, but I'd hope there were enough datapoint to see if one was likely to be better.

Basically what I'm asking is whether i've overlooked an option on somewhere like speediest.net that shows average speeds in the local region.

That link actually looks like it has what I need. :) It's Canada btw but obviously people use that site all over the world so country isn't particularly relevant as far as I can see.

EDIT: And that site shows about 3 dozen tests in the local area, with Telus (the DSL provider) giving speeds twice as fast as Shaw (Cable)... Hmmm.. So maybe I need to think about switching. Thanks Sparx.

Any other sites like that I can check?

Ookla use to have a site with all the speed test results, categorised by regions down to cities but the site seems to be gone.

That's the only one I can remember that also holds non-UK speed test data mate.

I take it you're in Canada if you're looking at Telus and Shaw Cable?
