Like many gamers I wish to talk to my friends on skype/vent while gaming, however after freshly installing windows on my build I have the following problem:

As soon as I start downloading/playing an online game/etc all my speed seems to drop from other applications and such, resulting in super slow skype calls.

Is this normal for wired connections? I've always had wireless so...

It's annoying as when downloading I get a nice 2-4 mbps download:confused:

So confused. It's a cat6 550mhz ethernet cable, with the onboard realtek 8111 gigabit ethernet port on the z68ap-d3 mobo.

So you're saying when you're using your internet connection, you have less bandwidth available for other applications?

Sounds like your enemy is the laws of physics, unless I'm missing something here.

Maybe you need to limit your download or upload speed? Otherwise, perhaps you have a driver issue? I think we need a clearer description of the problem - be specific.

Yes, less bandwidth for other applications - but with my old wireless dongle (which had a much lower download speed) I still managed a 'Fast' rated connection in skype/vent applications while playing online games.

How can I easily limit speeds? :/

Ok now upon speed testing (where before it was a solid line of stable connection@30mbps), it's now a super jaggedy up and down line at 2-5mbps..

Ffs this is the reason why I bought a cable..as i thought wireless was causing the problem.

Okay, Intel as first choice, but what's wrong with Broadcom? For that matter what's really wrong with Realtek for desktop use?

A couple of posts up the OP states that he went for a wired connection to fix a problem he thought was wireless related. It obviously hasn’t helped so it’s most likely a router/WAN side problem. With the mention of 30Mbps it’s probably Virgin’s fault.
