Hi ,I am having network/speed problems, i've 50 mg connection with virgin media, since the engineer installed the upgrade from 10 mg i've been having problems. They have checked it a number of times , each time initially i get a good result with the speed test-49 mg, second test it goes down to 34 mg, recently 18 mg and even 8-9 mg, something is wrong but i can't put my finger on it, i have updated the drivers, also ran a full anti virus/spyware scan with avast/malwarebytes , they both picked 3 to 4 threats each, i don't know if they were real threats or false positives, i however removed them in desperation. The engineer has said that it's a computer issue, he has checked the amount sent and coming in and it's 53 mg in and 49 mg out of the router but the pc is not using it.I'm totally helpless. My rig is ASRock P55 Pro/i5 750 LGA1156/ATI Radeon Vapour-x HD5770 1GB GDDR5/Corsair XMS2X2 GB DD3 1333 Mhz.

Is this just with speed tests or does it occur with large, sustained downloads from sites that can saturate a 50mbs line?

I have been getting huge download speeds from the usenet server, before the 50 meg i was dl'in at 900 to 1300 k/bytes max, with my new rig-the i5, on 50 mg at 36 mg speed test speed i was d'lin at 5900 k/bytes on high speed selected on server, so wow! I haven't overclocked yet!

CPU speed and overclocking has nothing to do with what speed your internet connection is.

Not really, no. A 50Mbit connection equates to roughly 6MB/sec of throughput - any old PC even from about 10 years ago should be able to handle that without much trouble.

i don't understand how the vm engineers came with their own laptop ,did a test, showed 49 mg , and on my pc it was still 17 mg. Even more ironic is that my laptop always gives half of my desktop,on the same connection. i.e. the pc shows 17 and the lappy 7 to i'm gonna install ubuntu to see what speeds that gives, 'cause according to vm the fault is within my end.

Pearl, are you using a router and if so is it the WNR2000 Netgear?
hi Zumbar, pleased to say i found the culprit,i did a format then checked the speeds before installing any anything, i was getting out full 50 mg, then i installed my programs one at a time, one of my trusted applications at a trojan within it, i am getting the full speeds now.
