Right a question for those in the know:-

History - was on ADSL with F2S and was getting speeds of ~6-6.5Mbps

Got o2 BB activated last week and I was thinking that I would get slightly higher speeds (albeit no huge) however on first activation I was sync'd at ~6.5Mbps after swapping routers to the new O2 wireless box I'm getting ~4.5Mbps(!). Just tried to ask O2 about this drop and can they change the SNR to get it back up, they say

"At the moment you're getting a speed of approx 5mb, as you said it was approx 6.5mb when you first started. You're currently on our Ultimate package, which is for speeds of approx 20mb. As you're not capable of getting this speed, you could be getting false noise coming through the line, so we'd recommend dropping you down to the Standard (8mb) package to eliminate this and hopefully increase your speed."

Hmmm but why the drop in the first place? and how do I get it back up?

I don't understand how people seem to think that you will be better speed if you change providers.

Your still running along the same copper to the exchange and that's where the biggest influence is.

You should actually learn about ADSL before you post sarcastic comments.

Admittedly, at that low a connection speed it is possible for ADSL2+ to actually perform worse than ADSL1, but in general ADSL2+ = faster than ADSL1 on the same line.

edit:

@the OP

Look at the other thread near the top of this forum for trying to switch to ADSL1 mode. It may help. Also, line stats are useful for us to diagnose issues/speed potential :)

Will post stats when I get home but from memory

Attn =52dB
SNR =~6dB <-- maybe wrong as this is a figure I remember from my ADSL sync - though I did tweak it to 3dB using DMT

As Aekeron said I changed from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ and I'm not refering to wanting a huge speed increase (upto 16 say), I knew that was never on the cards due to my line stats and my ADSL1 sync speed. The reason for changing ISP was not solely based on speed, it was more to do with service and value for money.

Maybe I was not clear in my OP, but my question was that when I first sync'd with o2 on adsl2+, my speed was 6.5Mbps and all seemed stable but it's dropped and I would like to know why; and what, if anything, I can do about it.

For info:-

I started with my old router (585v6), tried a few settings and rebooted and it dropped a bit to ~5.7 though I couldn't find out where to put the correct settings for authenticating so I put my new o2wireless box in (585v7) in and then synced at 5; i thought's hmm a bit low, so resynced the line and it went to 4.5 and stayed there.

In the UK, maybe. Depends how many customers the LLUers have.
It's still not a feature of ADSL though.

Well im hoping HarryPainful knew that i was referring to the UK. I could have said ASDL using BRAS Data Rate in my original post.

Hmmm but why the drop in the first place? and how do I get it back up?

They might have changed your DSL Type to Annex M since you are on Ultimate package. When I was on Annex M my sync speed was 16 Meg but I didn't need the extra upload bandwidth so I'm now back on Annex A syncing at 18 Meg.

The OP has changed from ADSL 1 to ADSL 2+ so it's fair to expect a speed increase...

No its not, your still running over the same copper line.

You really should look in to what your talking about before changing.

Oh noes, I wish someone had told me that before I changed from ADSL24 (synced at 8,128 kbps) to UK Online (synced at 20,100 kbps) :o:rolleyes:

That's debatable :p

(seriously, not all ADSL uses BT Wholesale)

lol i guess so :D

I knew that not everywhere uses BT since its British Telecom, but i thought all ADSL used the BRAS Data Rate system. Learn something new everyday i guess :p

OK here are my stats

Attn is a little high - was 50/52 before - I note that I am on Annex M, so might be worth shifting to Annex A, I take it there won't be a drop in the u/l speed then?

think you should get a bit more, heres mine on 02 , 65db attn , lol
