I'm trying to get to the bottom of speed issues I'm having with my ADSL connection. I am with Virgin Media on their 'up to' 8mbps connection.
I called them about the terrible speeds I was recieving, and they sent me an email to get me to try the BT Speed Tester to see if there was a line fault. This came back with a speed of 700kbps, which is apparently perfeclty acceptable for an 8mbps line.
The problem is, no other speed test I try gets anywhere near this speed. Most of the time I'm getting well under 400kbps, and even under 300kbps. I'm beginning to think the BT Speed Tester is deliberately biased to make out that there isn't an issue with the line.
I've also tried downloading a large file from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.u, which should be quite capable of supplying a stable download. However, the speed for the download fluctuates anywhere between 70kBps, all the way down to 20kBps, and it just goes up and down like this throughout the download, but sometimes settles at around 40kBps for a longer period.
I don't know the ins and outs of ADSL connections, but I personally think this is completely unacceptable. All of these tests are with the modem plugged into the master socket, behind the faceplate on the main BT socket.
I can see Virgin Media and BT completely washing their hands of this issue since the BT Speed Tester shows my connection is within limits. However, it is only with this particula speed test that it is within limits - downloads, general browsing and other speed tests all show the connection as far slower.
What can I do about this? I'm really cheesed that I'm currently paying for a connection that is slower than the one I had 5 years ago at my parents house. That doesn't seem right at all.
TIA,
Michael.
