Speed issues with Virgin lately?

I have a 10mb connection, I've had it for quite a few years and prior to this i had 4mb, then 2mb. During this entire time, i've moved once, too. It's always (aside from throttling) been rock solid.

Lately, i'm getting terrible download speeds (and i'm not talking torrents), and slow web page loads. With speed test, i get about 1mb now, if i'm lucky.

Strange thing is, it seems to have coincided with my moving to Win 7 retail. Prior to this i had used the RC with no problems.

I have:

Linksys WRT54GL Open Source Router using tomato
Edimax EW-7727In nMax 300Mbps Adapter

and again, it was all working fine until about a week ago.

Has anyone got any ideas i can try, to figure out what might be the issue?

Virgin 20Mb has been pretty crap for me so far. It was alright the first day I had it installed (Sat 31st Oct). But for the rest of the week it's been absolutely terrible.

Even watching I-player, I get messages saying my internet is too slow. I had never seen this message in four years with BE.

I hope to god it's a temporary issue. It's extremely distressing due to the fact I still have over 11 months left on the contract. :(

Hm. I get that problem but when I use the BBC speed test it will max my line. Also speedtest.net sometimes says I can't even download more than 100KB/s and yet on usenet I can max my connection out.

Im also on Win7 and Virgin 10mb.

Off peak I got a solid 10mb most of the time, other times it sticks to 3mb..gay throttling...

i'm not so fussed about actual dl speeds, its the long web page loads that are annoying me.

I don't know, i can't stop thinking that this all started when i moved to windows 7 retail, but prior to this i'd been on the RC for 6 months and it was rock solid.

For the moment i'm contecting the modem direct to the PC to see how it goes over the next day or two, and then after this if it works fine, then i'm stuffed, because i won't know where to start to fix this via my wireless stuff.

The speedtest should always be done from the same server.
I posted on here a while back showing how different servers vary wildly - was getting 8mb/s on one and 48mb/s on another!

Virgin are truly terrible.
We had 20mb last year, never got above 3-5mb and had terrible pings.
we moved down the road, and got 50mb this year. first few weeks was excellent cos we were getting 25mb! what a novelty. now we barely get above 1mb, have constant packet loss, pings over 1000, iplayer is unusable, youtube doesnt laod, it takes literally minutes to load a webpage.
its perfect from 4am-6am, then after that it is unusable again till 4am.
we have rang them a million times and got an engineer once, all they ever say is sorry, theres a problem with the lines in your area were working on it. i have yet to see any virgin van or engineer looking people do anything around my area and it is getting worse, filed an official complaint and seriously considering going to ofcom. I just want to be able to cancel the contract totally without penalty, even though were students and a few months into the year i would rather take a loss on a few months of a 12month adsl contract as i just want rid of this terrible company. 1mb adsl would be literally a thousand times better than this.

I HATE virgin so much that words cannot express the true level of my hatred.
Had nothing but problems with them for 2 years and there customer service is the worst of any company in existence.

I've actually had a pretty good experience with virgin. I've had the occasional period of bad speed/ping but overall they seem to sort it out within a couple days, and the other times it's turned out to be my router (embarrassingly). Upgrading to the 50mb so I can escape their traffic management and the accusations/complaints of my housemates :D

Well im in a student house currently and having a bit of a nightmare myself! We are on the 20mb package and we get around 12+ mb down most of the day which is fine for now (qos will be sorted next week hopefully!) however our upload is 0.05, yes 0.05 mbps! Its rubbish to say the least! Is there anything i can do about this?
