Speed limit to 50mph

A while back i realised that if your looking at a news story thats 3 weeks old, and its something as controversial as speed limits... Its already been discussed on ocuk!
 
im not really sure whats going on around here.

the A127 has now got an average speed limit of 50 when it was 70 before however.... all 4 of the main dual's in essex (a12,a127, a13 and a130) are now been driven on at below the speed limit by everyone. And im not talking traffic making it bad, everyone is sticking to 50-60 even if the limit is 70 making it hard to make any "progress".

it seems the slow (green?) bug is catching on to everyone down here :(
 
You'd be surprised how far you can get limited to 56MPH tbh, you often find yourself catching up traffic thats long since raced away from you.

As long as acceleration time was not restricted also,imo a lot of drivers would soon get used to it, the same thing happened to the HGV industry a few years back, these days, speed limiters are accepted without question.
 
personally i think we should all become french men/women and strike untill labour are removed from govenment....

They've turned a few roads near me into 50s, most notably the road the goes past the Belfry golf course. In the hours of daylight it's made no differance whatsoever becasue you could never do 60 for more than 10 seconds anyway because of trucks or people that didn't want to do 60. You could rarely overtake safely because of bends, solid lines or oncoming traffic. You always got numptys slowing down to 40 or 30 (!!) for the 3 speed cameras.

While i don't think this is an especially good idea, or believe it would save any lives, i don't think it will make any noticable differance to our lives in the unlikely event of it going through.
 
It's part of the government's obession with stupidity. It won't save lives, and it won't reduce emissions particularly either. If they really wanted to improve efficency and safety, a massive program of work to remove unnecessary obstructions and bends would do much more, and provide good economic stimulus, but we know what the government's agenda really is, it has nothing to do with safety or carbon reduction, but is instead an obsession with revenue generation through draconian law enforcement.

No they don't, they tend to towards the natural speed limit of the road (as defined by observational distance, hazard risk and prevailing conditions) assuming they have been properly trained and not bought into the 'speed limits define safety' crap that has been spread around by the government.

If you set the arbitary limit above the natural speed limit, traffic will not move at this speed (see single track roads with limited visiblity and 60mph limits), if you set the arbitary limit below the natural limit, most drivers will break the limit (in the absence of draconian enforcement techniques that remove concentration from the road and on to the speedo).
